The mandate of the Chief Firearms Office (CFO) is to protect public safety through the administration of the licensing provisions of the Firearms Act and Regulations. The Chief Firearms Officer for the Province of Ontario is delegated authority under the Act by the Minister of the Solicitor General, and is responsible for the administration and delivery of these key components of the Firearms Act:

- licencing individuals and businesses
- approving transfers of restricted and prohibited firearms
- approving shooting clubs and shooting ranges
- issuing Authorizations to Carry
- issuing Authorizations to Transport
- designating Firearms Officers
- designating firearms safety course instructors

The Chief Firearms Office:

- determines the eligibility of Ontario licence applicants to obtain or keep a firearms licence
- issues, refuses to issue, renews and revokes firearms licences
- sets firearms licence conditions

**How do I qualify?**:
**Mandatory**:

- Ability to pass an OPP background security investigation.
- Oral and written French Language skills at the advanced level in designated positions.

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**:

- Ability to identify and analyze the nature of enquiries or calls, some of which are confidential and/or sensitive in nature, gaining clarity of request, and determining how best to respond or whether to refer other personnel.
- Knowledge of and ability to interpret legislation and communicate comprehensive explanations/information
- Knowledge of records management practices to maintain an organized, up-to-date records system and to locate and correctly file documents.
- Effective written and oral presentation skills.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills to identify and respond to customers' needs, provide general and specialized information about the firearms licensing program, operate in a team environment and liaise with internal and external stakeholders. Ability to exercise sensitivity, tact and diplomacy when responding to requests for information from individuals who are sometimes distraught or emotionally charged situations.
- Effective analytical and evaluative skills to review information from various sources and make decisions based strict directives and guidelines
- Problem-solving skills to check and verify a variety of reports, forms and documents for accuracy and to follow-up and correct where appropriate.
