The Custodian at The Salvation Army's Nanaimo New Hope Centre plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for our clients, staff, and visitors. This role ensures that our facility remains a safe and welcoming space where individuals can access the services they need to transform their lives.

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Establish and monitor preventative maintenance procedures for related equipment; recommend repairs and purchases as required.
- Perform a number of minor repairs and duties in a variety of trade areas such as electrical, carpentry, plumbing, and paint; reports safety concerns and major repair issues (e.g. furniture and fixtures).
- Ensure the general upkeep of the facility such as cleaning floors, washrooms, windows, dusting, collects and dispose of garbage, vacuum, etc.
- Check, repair, clean, move, arrange, and dusts furniture as required.
- Ensure the general upkeep of external property such as mowing lawns, keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice, cleaning main floor outside widows, picking up litter, sweeping sidewalks, gardening, watering, and

pruning shrubs, raking,
- Check doors and windows to ensure building and resident security; provide access to the facility and secure the facility as needed.
- Maintain an inventory of custodial supplies and request reorders as needed.
- Ensure that custodial equipment is in good working condition and report any issues promptly.
- Restock washrooms supplies and distribute received materials as required.
- Spot wash accessible walls, strip, and wax floors and shampoo carpets as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned

**QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS**:
**Education/Certifications**:

- High School Graduation or equivalent required.
- Occupational First Aid Level 1 or equivalent required.
- Valid WHMIS certification required.
- Clear TB Skin test required.
- Clear Criminal Record Check through the BC Criminal Record Review Program.

**Experience**:

- Six (6) months of related experience in janitorial/custodian work.
- Knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials, and equipment.
- Knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting.
- Familiarity with safety protocols, including the proper handling of cleaning chemicals and the use of personal

protective equipment.

**Hours**:
37.5 hours per week.

**PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES**:

- Problem solving and analytical skills.
- Meticulous attention to detail to ensure that all areas are thoroughly cleaned and maintained to high standards.
- Good organizational skills to keep janitorial/custodial supplies and equipment in order and maintain a neat and tidy work area.
- Must be able to follow instructions, both verbal and written, working co-operatively with others, and complete to a satisfactory level all assigned tasks.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are important for interactions with colleagues, clients, and the public. The ability to report issues, take instructions, and communicate courteously is essential.
- Strong time management skills to prioritize cleaning tasks efficiently and meet deadlines.
- Ability to identify and address cleaning and maintenance issues independently and make decisions about when to escalate problems to management.
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physical stamina and the ability to lift and carry objects up to 25 pounds.
- Commitment to the mission and values of the Salvation Army.
- Background check consent.
- A clear vulnerable sector screening.
- A clean drivers abstract.
- Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.
