**Our Liquid Waste Services Department is seeking an Environmental Technician I who will facilitate the beneficial use of residuals produced from the Metro Vancouver region such as biosolids and water treatment residuals. This position involves a diversity of tasks including maintaining equipment and fleet vehicles, assisting in soil sampling programs for environmental assessments and regulatory compliance, assisting in various research projects, leading the administration of small sized construction projects and the management and analysis of large databases.**

**This role**:

- Monitors the day to day operations of the project; provides direction to the site crew; inspects quality of materials and workmanship performed by private contractors and/or the District's own work forces; checks all work and materials for conformance to specifications; ensures that Provincial regulations are met; approves contractors' invoices.
- Prepares progress/status reports; certifies labour time sheets and requisitions for equipment and materials.
- Prepares information material; organizes workshops and makes oral and graphic presentations of policy and technical material; assists in maintaining the program website.
- Conducts field tests, inspections, and surveys; gathers samples and submits for analysis; interprets lab results; maintains records and databases.
- Attends internal and external meetings related to provide technical information on biosolids and biosolids products; maintains contact with contractors, government agencies, and the public on matters related to the work.
- Performs work of equal importance, difficulty and responsibility, requiring comparable qualifications.

**To be successful, you have**:

- Completion of the 12th school grade, including courses in mathematics and sciences and some post-secondary courses in environmental sciences; a two-year diploma in Environmental Technology or related program is preferred; some experience in environmental project work; or, an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Good knowledge of MVRD policies, procedures and strategies, and government regulations related to the work.
- Good knowledge of inspection and quality control methods and procedures; sampling methods; and statistical analysis.
- Working knowledge of standard environmental nomenclature and applicable wastewater residuals and treatment methods.
- Some knowledge of construction practices.
- Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications related to the work.
- Ability to prepare reports and estimate costs of site work.
- Ability to make presentations at workshops and seminars.
- Ability to extract, organize and summarize data and narrative information from a variety of sources.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions with minimum supervision.
- Ability to oversee and monitor the work of private contractors.
- Ability to arrange an effective work schedule and perform a variety of clerical tasks related to District environmental functions.
- Ability to communicate effectively and establish and maintain working relationships with contractors, the public, other government officials and District staff.
- Skill in the use of sampling and computing instruments.
- Valid B.C. Driver's licence.
