**Educational Assistant II**

**6 hours per day**

**Job Summary**:
Under the direction of the Reading Clinician, and in collaboration with the necessary teachers, the Educational Assistant Level II, Reading Tutor, is responsible for providing reading support for individual or groups of students both in and outside of the classroom.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Working in individual or small group situations with students between grades six and eight including those who are learning disabled, cognitively challenged, or have other exceptional learning needs
- Implementing an individualized reading program for each student
- Setting up and maintaining a work area
- Preparing daily tutoring activities, keeping detailed records of tutoring sessions, and participating in writing an end of session report for each student describing activities completed in the Reading Tutor Program
- Other duties as assigned

**Qualifications, Skills and Abilities**:

- Qualifications:_
- Completion of Educational Assistant/Para Educator program or related area of post-secondary education is required OR an equivalent combination of experience and training in the care of children/youth with additional needs
- Experience working with children/youth, ideally with children with additional needs
- Strong academic background, especially in English language skills
- Multicultural experience would be an asset
- Effective communication and organizational skills
- Willingness to learn new skills and strategies
- External applicants must supply a Criminal Record Search and a cleared Child Abuse Registry check upon hire
- Computer skills
- Valid Manitoba Driver’s license, driver’s abstract, and access to a reliable vehicle is required
- Additional qualifications preferred, but not required:

- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training (NCI)
- First Aid and CPR training

- Ability to work without direction supervision, to make immediate decisions and to take appropriate actions in a variety of situations
- Demonstrated ability to establish positive relationships with children/youth
- Strong judgement and problem-solving skills with the ability to handle difficult and/or sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy
- Ability to be flexible to meet the varying academic, social, emotional, and behavioural needs of students
- Ability to develop and demonstrate awareness of the underlying reasons for challenging behaviour and to respond positively
- Ability to interact with the students in an effective manner
- Physical abilities consistent with requirements of the job (see physical demands and working conditions, below)

- Sufficient vision and hearing to perform related job duties
- Able to work in an active physical environment that may require skating, sitting, standing, bending, crouching, lifting, pushing, pulling, squatting, etc. (specific requirements will vary by assignment)
- Able to operate and maintain specialized devices, equipment, and technologies
- Working conditions:_
- Exposure to noise and frequent interruptions with conflicting demands.
- May be exposed to verbally and physically aggressive behaviours

**Salary**: $22.15-$27.09 per hour
