Faculty of Science

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Communications Officer (CO), the Communications Associate will support the CO for all activities related to communications plans, will produce communications materials including written and multimedia content, and will develop new opportunities to maximize the Faculty of Science’s mission and strategic communications plans and vision. Works closely with the Faculty and units to help to create the necessary supportive communications strategy and content to raise the Faculty’s visibility and to build awareness of the Faculty’s research, people, students, publications, events and other initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Produces and sources McGill Science-related stories on topics such as faculty prizes and awards, research news, student success stories, staff achievements, activities, and events-
- Produces photos and videos for distribution through the Faculty’s digital networks- Participates in the implementation of new initiatives that support, enhance and/or reflect the Faculty’s priorities- Identifies needs and interests of external and internal stakeholders to inform decision-making about which McGill Science-related stories to cover and how to cover them- Periodically reviews and monitors the Faculty site and subsidiary sites and makes recommendations to optimize user experience and align sites with evolving digital standards- Monitors internal and external news channels for McGill Science-related coverage and, where appropriate, shares these stories through the Faculty’s communications channels- Maintains a regular level of daily activity on the Faculty of Science social media accounts to maintain and build engagement with the Faculty community- Performs and organizes activities to support the daily operations of the unit by ensuring that communication activities are carried out in accordance with established goals and objectives- Addresses web compliance issues with the Communications Officer and follows up accordingly- Provides coaching and guidance on writing content, organization of web pages and information for faculty, field stations and department web editors- Reviews analytics data and makes recommendations on social media strategy- Keeps current with best practices, top trends and new tools in the rapidly changing field of communications, design, multimedia and social media- Performs other related tasks.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities-
- Experience managing websites and writing compelling web copy- An undergraduate degree in journalism or a communications-related field is a plus.- Experience in a research environment is an asset.- Creativity and ability to approach communications efforts from a variety of perspectives- Exceptional attention to detail and consistent ability to prepare high-quality documents- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment- Ability to establish priorities and short/long-term plans and objectives- Demonstrated professionalism, discretion, and exceptional interpersonal skills- Strong organizational skills; ability to assess and resolve problems- Experience in implementing communications plans and using analytics to assess the success of communications initiatives, a plus.-
- Experience and skills with photography, video production, and basic graphic design a plus.- Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level # 4 on a scale of 0-4.
