The Department of Microbiology and Immunology, established in 1939, has the unique mandate of research and teaching in Microbiology and Immunology. Teaching occurs in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Faculties of Health Sciences and the School of Graduate Studies. Research Spans key areas of infection and immunity, namely the molecular and cellular biology of microorganisms and viruses as well as the cellular and molecular biology of the immune system.
The lab hiring has an overarching goal of our research is to further our understanding of conventional and innate-like invariant T cell responses in health and disease. We are particularly interested in cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells and mucosa-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells and their therapeutic potentials in various conditions, primarily in cancer and in sepsis. We use preclinical models in our mechanistic studies as well as clinical samples in an effort to translate our findings “from the benchtop to the bedside”. The knowledge to be gained is expected to lead to novel disease-tailored immunotherapies.
**Responsibilities**:
The Summer Student 3 will provide specialized support in the areas of administrative services, research services, infrastructure services, or student services. The incumbent will have responsibility for carrying out activities which require higher level specialization of skills.
- Generate attractive graphs for a few papers, using our existing data. These may include violin, volcano, tSNE, and PCA plots and heat maps.
- Generate a library of not-copyright-protected scientific icons and images exclusively for the Haeryfar lab
- Create easy-to-use instructions for generating various graph/illustration types
- Help update our lab website
- The incumbent will be responsible for providing support to faculty or staff, and for effectively carrying out a variety of tasks in accordance with policies, procedures, and instructions received from their supervisor. The incumbent will take guidance from their supervisor, and work productively and courteously with their work team and other members of the Western community.**Qualifications**:
**Education**:
- 2 years of post-secondary education, and be a student returning to studies in the fall
- Having a background in immunology or other life science would be preferred.
**Experience**:
- Previous directly related experience
- Experience in generating graphs ( may include violin, volcano, tSNE, and PCA plots and heat maps) and in illustration/graphic design would be assets.

- Written and verbal communication skills to express ideas clearly, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
- Ability to maintain a positive, outgoing attitude with genuine customer service orientation
- Reliable and dependable with the ability to consistently work assigned schedule

- Computer skills with Microsoft Office, with the ability to learn and use new software programs as required

- Ability to work in a manner that is compliant with confidentiality requirements as applicable
