**Environmental Assistant**

Status: Temporary/Seasonal Full Time

Hours of Work: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, with occasional evening or weekend work (May
- August)

Wage: $20.00/ hour

**Position Summary**

The Environmental Assistant will assist the Environmental Coordinator with weed inspections on public and private land through the identification of regulated weeds and enforcement of responsibilities as per the Alberta Weed Control Act and Regulations. The Environmental Assistant will be responsible for creating and maintaining inspection files including mapping infestations using EDDMapS Pro. Additionally, the Environmental Assistant will carry out control of pests on municipal properties and assist residents with trapping and relocating pests as per the Agricultural Pests Act. A significant component of the position is community engagement and outreach which involves educating residents and visitors through events and creating relevant material for social media. Additional tasks may include vegetation control, provincial weed and pest surveys, monitoring for aquatic invasive species and natural area restoration projects.

**Key Duties and Responsibilities**
- Inspection of vegetation on private and public property;
- Identify weeds as per the Weed Control Act/Regulation and understand appropriate control measures;
- Enforcement of the Alberta Weed Control Act;
- Identify/control pests as listed in the Alberta Agricultural Pests Act;
- Communicate effectively and professionally with the public in addressing weed/pest concerns and provide them with advice on effective control solutions;
- Prepare content for social media to highlight timely and relevant topics and events;
- Collect and document accurate and detailed information for case files;
- Inspect properties on foot or from a vehicle and accurately map weed infestations using EDDMapS Pro;
- Perform restoration efforts such as seed distribution and collecting, preparing, and installing cuttings;
- Identify native plants;
- Attend courses and training events such as BearSmart, Municipal Safety Orientation, Legislative Workshop and any additional courses required to work safely within the job description;
- Complete required documentation and adhere to rules and procedures as per the Municipal Safety Program;
- Perform other related office and shop duties (clean and organize work area, housekeeping, etc.)

**Knowledge, Abilities and Skills**
- Knowledge of the Alberta Weed Control Act & Regulations
- Knowledge of the Alberta Agricultural Pest Act & Regulations
- Knowledge of the Alberta Soil Conservation Act & Regulations
- Knowledge of Crowsnest Pass indigenous flora and fauna
- Knowledge of and the ability to identify invasive plant species and pests including aquatic species
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and through written records
- Skill in communicating professionally and effectively with people of various demographics
- Ability to navigate to backcountry locations and read maps
- Knowledge of/experience working in a location with wildlife
- Ability to perform reclamation and restoration practices in riparian areas
- Ability to work outdoors on uneven terrain and in variable weather conditions
- Ability to safely/skillfully operate a four-wheel-drive truck
- Ability to perform all tasks safely in accordance with OH&S regulations and the Municipal Safety Policy

**Education and Experience**

Post-secondary education in environmental science or a related field is preferred. Experience in vegetation management and/or reclamation is considered an asset.

Prior to employment a pre-employment screening process must be completed, including a successful completion of a criminal record check and driver’s abstract.
