Job Description Summary

The Director, Library Communications & Marketing is responsible for the overall strategic direction of the Library s communications and marketing functions including strategic planning and implementation, media relations, issues management, and internal and external communication programs and materials.

The Director is required to conceptualize, implement and lead a full range of communications and marketing strategies designed to support staff and stakeholders; and promote the University Library at the local, provincial, national and international levels. Additionally, the Director will provide expertise and leadership to enhance and support the communications and marketing efforts of the Library Development Office.

Organizational Status

Reports to and works closely with the University Librarian. Works in collaboration with other members of the Library Executive Team (Lib-Exec) including: Associate University Librarians (AULs), Director of Library HR, Director of Finance & Facilities and the Director of Library Development. Works closely with division/branch heads and other Library staff and faculty as needed. Maintains close working relationships with various UBC units and departments including Media Relations, Government Relations and internal/external stakeholders. Liaises with UBC s communicators network and collaborates with UBC departments, faculties and other groups on communication strategies.

Work Performed
- Develops, implements and evaluates broad communications and marketing strategies to advance the Library’s strategic goals and to increase awareness of the Library on campus, within the broader academic community, and with national and international professional associations.
- Leads the exploration, conceptualization, design and implementation of innovative marketing and communications plans, projects, programs and materials that advance the Library’s strategic initiatives.
- Leads and coordinates library-wide and branch-specific communications and marketing initiatives of library services.
- Works with Library Technology, Discovery & User Experience (TDUX) to develop and manage Library public and staff websites, including concept and content as well and plan implementations and ongoing web management
- Provides proactive and reactive advice to Lib-Exec, heads and managers on all matters related to communications and marketing opportunities, media relations and positioning.
- Cultivates and maintains relationships beneficial to advancing the Library’s interests with a wide variety of groups including faculty, public affairs, government offices, other institutions and professional associations, internal and external stakeholders.
- Designs, develops and implements effective and appropriate organizational structure and team; including management and mentoring of staff responsible for Library-wide communications and marketing activities.Leads the graphics, signage activities of the UBC Library; setting program standards.
- Works closely with Library HR on personnel issues, including hiring, managing, coaching, terminations and staff training/development. Manages the performance review cycle for staff, including the development and review of job descriptions, annual setting of goals and objectives and annual performance reviews.
- Monitors and maintains Library Communications & Marketing annual budget as well as budgets for special events or projects.
- Provides support to fundraising and major gifts activities of the Library Development Office through creation of communications strategies, programs and materials as required.
