Pilot Plant Technician

The Pilot Plant Technician reports to the Scale-up Manager and is responsible for executing pilot-scale experiments as per batch process records for processes scaled up from the laboratory. This role involves the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of pilot plant equipment and execution of processes according to defined procedures, protocols, and/or on-the-job training, as applicable.
**Key Responsibilities**:
**Process Safety**:
- Use designated PPE for pilot plant and adjoining labs, follow safety procedures
- Report safety concerns to safety committee and supervisor, support investigations
- Operate equipment according to the manufacturer’s limits and training provided
**Equipment Operation and Troubleshooting**:
- Operate stainless steel fermenters, continuous centrifuges, and other equipment
- Report, document and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions to minimize downtime
- Coordinate with internal and external support for equipment repairs and upgrades
**Equipment Maintenance and Calibration**:
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to ensure optimal performance
- Calibration of equipment, maintain critical spares inventory to limit downtime
**Batch Preparation and Planning**:
- Work collaboratively with scientists to plan and execute batch activities
- Order raw materials, parts, and consumables, and maintain the inventory log
**Bioburden Reduction and Aseptic Operation**:
- Scheduled cleaning of the pilot plant, process equipment, and accessories
- Aseptic operations
- BSC operation, media sterilizations and sterile transfers
- Execute basic wet chemistry and analytical procedures, microscopy and plating
**Bioprocess Monitoring**:
- Monitor and control processes to ensure parameters are within specified ranges
- Address process anomalies in collaboration with scientists and the supervisor
- Assist in analyzing experimental data and contribute to interpreting results
- Collaborate with scientists to optimize process parameters at the pilot scale
**Quality/GMP/GLP Compliance**:
- Document steps in batch records, forms and logs, following data integrity principles
- Address QMP audit observations to continuously improve the pilot plant
- Raise any non-conformities, or observations to the supervisor
- Support root cause investigations to identify and implement CAPAs
- Assist identification and closure of GAPs in pilot plant operations
**Desired Skills and Experience**:
- Bachelor's degree in Science/Engineering preferred, but Engineering Technologist Diploma or equivalent acceptable
- Relevant experience: 0-2 years, ideally in an academic / industrial laboratory or plant setting
- Proactive approach to safety
- Excellent mechanical aptitude and curiosity to learn
- Awareness/ training in GxP practices
- Ability to follow set procedures with precision, tenacity to complete tasks on time
**Work Environment**:
- The role requires working in a plant with pressure vessels and chemicals
- Adherence to safety protocols is essential to ensure a safe working environment
- Occasional weekend support may be required to support operations
