Full time (35 hours per week)
Overview:
St. Mary of the People is seeking a full time Custodian who will be responsible for custodial services and basic repairs of the Church, Hall, Rectory and its property to ensure a clean, safe and attractive environment for all.
**Responsibilities**:
- Maintain floors and carpets (e.g., sweeping, mopping and vacuuming) throughout the church, including under the pews, washrooms, meeting rooms, and Parish Hall
- Keep the Halls, kitchen, sacristy and appliances clean on a regular basis
- Restock all disposables (e.g. soap, toilet paper, paper towel, etc.)
- Set up and arrange Church hall and meeting rooms for events and meetings as requested
- Maintenance and repair of church equipment/tools, and the replacement of electrical/building parts as needed
- Responsible for the maintenance needs of the church complex and its surrounding property
- Dispose of garbage from church, hall and office and dispose it in appropriate garbage bins outside
- Clean, service and sanitize washrooms and kitchen areas
- Wash windows, glass doors, mirrors and fixtures using both step and extension ladder as needed
- Maintain adequate inventories of church wares, cleaning supplies, toiletries and lighting (e.g., soap, toilet papers, paper towels, etc.)
- Coordinating with office staff to maintain inventory, and order supplies and equipment.
- Remove debris and inappropriate articles found within the building facility, entrances to the church, within property perimeters, parking lot, and lawns
- Ensure all entrances and walkways to the church are free of snow and ice as required to support Mass schedules where not covered by a separate contractor.
- Assisting contractors, parish groups and third-party companies requiring access to the parish properties, and supervising these groups and individuals where necessary
- Assisting with liturgical decorations as required
- Perform routine checks, general maintenance (e.g., painting, lighting, etc.,) and simple repairs (e.g., pews, kneelers, doors, minor leaks, lighting fixtures, etc.)
- Ensure the upkeep of the church HVAC, Security Alarm, and Fire Safety Systems
- Observe appearance and condition of premises and equipment; report anticipated and preventative repair situations, safety hazards, security issues, or conditions that require the services of licensed tradesmen or contractors, to the Pastor. Co-ordinates with property and maintenance companies and trades people as required
- Respond to emergency calls/maintenance requests as required
- Walkabout inside and outside church grounds to check for safety hazards such as lighting, steps, handrails in good condition, no slip/trip hazards, litter, etc.
- Unlock and open the church
- Shovel snow, remove ice, and salt the walkways in the winter to ensure safe accessibility to facilities (what not contracted out)
- Notify the pastor in case of any damages or repairs that may be required in the church property.
- Maintain outdoor areas of church and rectory including picking up litter, sweeping and gardening and landscaping duties
- Assist with set up for special liturgical seasons such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter etc.
- Other duties, as required.
General Requirements:
- Good communication and problem-solving skills
- Some knowledge of building safety requirements
- Prior maintenance and custodial services are a strong asset
- Availability to work on Saturdays and Sundays. Hours of work are based on flex hours as dictated by clean up requirements based on functions and activities going on
- Proficiency with small hand tools and ability to operate machinery.
- Ability to work on both weekdays and weekends and offer flexible hours, as required
- Physical ability to do work involving walking, bending, reaching for extended periods of time; and lifting up to 65 lbs.
- Minor repair skills
- Good interpersonal skills, diplomacy and capacity to work cooperatively with staff, clergy and volunteers of the church, parishioners, related organizations and external contractors
- Ability to assess immediate maintenance and custodial needs and to prioritize tasks
- Knowledge of use and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment and appliances
- Knowledge of the safe disposal of chemical liquids and other hazardous materials
- Knowledge of the Catholic Church, its tenets and culture, and respect for its leadership and parish clergy
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
