**Introduction**

The term “Officer” will be used below to describe the position. This is a youth position funded by Eco Action (the person must be under 30 years old).

The BC Marine Trails (BCMT) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of the BC coastline. The BCMT is based on a three-pillar program: First Nations engagement, Protecting our Coast, and Trails Development. These programs work together to help the association achieve its Vision of ‘the entire B.C. coastline linked through marine routes and land sites for sustainable water-based public recreation’.

Our Mission is “to work with First Nations and stakeholders to build, protect and promote a public network of marine trails allowing recreational navigation of the BC coastline with mínimal impact on the environment.”

The BCMT values the ecologically diverse environment of coastal BC and helps to protect the coast through responsible stewardship practices.

**Description of GIS Officer Position**

**Responsibilities - 1.0 FTE (6 months)**:
**GIS Planning**:

- Examine our current mapping system and develop plans to rebuild and redesign our current maps.
- Analyze key features of our principal maps and give recommendations on further development.
- Develop an overall plan to present to key committees and BC Marine Trails board.

**ArcGIS Mapping**:

- Rebuild the current maps in Experience Builder (current maps were developed in Web AppBuilder).
- Optimize mobile configuration.
- Develop a custom measurement widget or rewrite code for the current widget existing in ArcGIS web AppBuilder.
- Examine the current heatmap system and make recommendations to work automatically and make necessary changes.
- Ensure new mapping systems are integrated smoothly with the existing database.

**Content Layout and Development**:

- Examine the current layout and make recommendations and improvements for better user experience.
- Improve the overall layout of our mapping display.
- Examine the integration of Survey123 (site condition reporting) and make recommendations and changes on its improvement and integration into the new mapping system.
- Incorporate the CHS charts as a base map
- Design and create a marine hazards layer, and migrate some initial content
- Design and create a trail continuity layer, and migrate some initial content
- **Maintenance**:

- Develop a maintenance plan for the new mapping system.
- Work with our current database and make suggestions for migrating to a new database.
- Work with our Trails Development data manager and learn how the data is updated.
- Assist the First Nations liaison with shape files.

**Qualifications**:

- Relevant degree or equivalent experience in GIS technical and development training.
- Demonstrated experience in working with ArcGIS Online, Web Appbuilder, Experience Builder and working within a development environment..
- Excellent verbal communication skills with a keen attention to detail.
- Reasonable proficiency in digital media tools, content management systems, and web design.
- Knowledge of coastal conservation and environmental issues including marine plastic pollution, invasive species and backcountry behaviours.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience in the outdoor adventure industry, tourism, paddle sports and/or trail building is an asset but not required.
- General knowledge of the BC coast and its recreational opportunities.

**Compensation and Employment Details**:

- The officer will submit a detailed time report twice a month to the treasurer and president, on the 16th of the month and the 1st of the following month
- The officer will keep track of their hours and descriptions of their activities on a Google spreadsheet. An example is available for use.
- The officer will be paid $30.00 an hour plus EI/CPP and 4% holiday. The maximum number of hours per week is 35 hours, worked out over a 4-week average period.
- Initially this contract will run from May 1, 2024 to October 31, 2024 at 35.0 hours a week (according to averaging agreement in Employee Handbook). This position is reliant on available funding.
- The employee will be required to sign an employment contract.
