Performs full range of diagnostic ultrasound imaging / therapeutic services and associated patient care with support the Heart and Vascular Institute’s mission to provide diagnostic information for the subsequent treatment of patients at WVU Medicine.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1. High School diploma or Equivalent OR Graduate of an accredited Medical sonography program

2. Certification in two of the following: Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS), Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS), Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer (RCCS), Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) or Registered Vascular Specialist (RVS)
- Of the two certifications, one must be _in vascular and_ one must be in cardiac._

3. Certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.

EXPERIENCE:
1. Five years of experience in Cardiac and Vascular Sonography

1. Promotes and contributes positively to intradepartmental and interdepartmental relationships with no more than two valid complaints in a six-month period.

2. Oversees daily work flow and problem solving in designated specialized modality.

3. Maintains the expertise in their designated modality and provides orientation to new staff members.

4. Supports Cardiovascular staff by promoting cooperative problem solving and team building by displaying a professional attitude and demeanor.

5. In conjunction with Supervisor and Manager, functions as a liaison with other departments to coordinate services.

6. Assists with quality assurance functions.

7. Monitors inventory of medical supplies to ensure no interruption of patient care.

8. Provides direct feedback to Supervisor/Manager regarding technologist performance.

9. Troubleshoots equipment issues and contacts appropriate Biomedical Engineers. Reports equipment failures immediately upon identification.

10. Supports development of protocols with Supervisor/Manager/Cardiologist/Vascular Surgeons.

11. Participates in Human Resource functions related to interviewing, selection and retention of staff.

12. Ensures consistent practice of quality imaging among all shifts and individuals.

13. Plans and performs imaging procedures to produce sonography medical images for the diagnosis or treatment of patients meeting the equality of standards of the department as identified through professional literature, department protocol, policy and procedure.

14. Demonstrates appropriate level of knowledge and technical aspects of the position, maintaining professional and technical competencies as required by the organization, the accreditation and licensing bodies.

15. Reviews the physician order completely for information of the procedure to be performed for each patient; refers any questions to the sinologist or referring physician before performing the study.

16. Participates in in-house training and development offerings and applies the resultant skills and knowledge to position performance, monitored by supervision.

17. Performs High Level Disinfection of ultrasound equipment per department policy.

18. Performs image procedures based on assessment of the status of the patient, request of the service, and imaging protocols. Monitored by periodic image evaluations and supervision.

19. Produces images of optimal quality by using imaging equipment and systems in the provision of image delivery and archiving.

20. Maintains an expertise in anatomy, physiology, and pathology relative to imaging in order to optimize the procedure and ensure patient care / safety.

21. Assesses patient’s needs and provides imaging related to comfort, hygiene, range of motion, and provides support accordingly.

22. Prepares sterile trays; which are utilized for the imaging procedure according to procedural guidelines and protocols.

23. Educates patients regarding cardiovascular procedures by explaining the procedure and answering questions accordingly.

24. Engages in problem solving, crisis management, systems implementation, and performance improvements throughout the hospital to promote and support efficient, high quality, and cost effective patient care.

25. Displays imaging techniques, patient care, and guest relation behaviors in accordance with the WVUH Administrative Policies and Procedures, heart and Vascular Institute Department Policies and Procedures, State and Federal Regulation, and The Joint Commission guidelines.

26. Position patients accurately in accordance with established protocols.

27. Participates in coordination of daily work flow.

28. Provides clinical supervision and instruction within the policies of the Echo/Vascular program and its respective accrediting bodies. Performs as a clin
