Come join our team Camp Alliwannado is leadership-focused day camp with locations in Tavistock & Ayr, ON. For our first summer in Ayr we will be offering 6 weeks of themed programming for over 75 kids a week We are searching for creative, fun individuals to join us this summer to fill this position Head Counsellors will be responsible for 2-4 "tree groups" and help to ensure quality programming and excellent supervision at all times. The tree groups will each have their own regular counsellor so the job of a Head Counsellor will be more planning and executing of larger cohort activities of campers in the same age group

Head Counsellors are directly responsible to the camp director for his/her conduct and performance of responsibilities. Head Counsellors must be willing to respect each other and the environment while providing a safe space where campers feel welcomed and valued. Must be willing to work as a team to promote friendships, provide leadership, and foster the camp experience.

Employment Period: July and August; Head counsellors are expected to commit between 6-7 weeks. Head Counsellors are scheduled by the week and need to be available Monday-Friday of their scheduled weeks. Our Ayr location will run from July 8th-August 16th, with site set-up occurring July 2-5th.

Age: 18+

**Must be able to commute to Ayr, ON.**

Screening Required: Application, Police Records Check 18+ (every 3 years), References, Interview

Pay: Head Counsellors earn an honorarium of $600 or more per week.

Training: Applicants must be able to attend mandatory staff training in Tavistock (tentative date: June 26-27) and Head Counsellor training weekend - location TBD (tentative date: June 8-9).

Head Counsellor Responsibilities

All responsibilities of a counsellor in addition to:

- Supervise 2 to 3 tree groups (called “forests”)
- Ensuring counsellors are creating meaningful tree times
- Rotating through tree times or helping with challenging groups
- Responsible for planning and leading rotations and CYOA with your age branch
- Assisting the program team with the planning for your section
- Scheduled to work some early/late care throughout the week
- Help run morning movers/daily wrap up
- Plan with other counsellors
- Communicate any issues with campers or staff with program team

Counsellor Responsibilities

Tree Group:

- By example and guidance, maintains a high morale among the assigned group of campers. Models love, patience, sharing, and mutual respect.
- Accepts the head counsellor responsibility for 2 or 3 groups of 6-10 campers and maintains direct responsibility for the duration of the camp session. This includes knowing where campers are at all times. Takes a personal interest in each camper. Understands the needs of each child and ensures safety and wellbeing.
- Generates a welcoming feeling to arriving campers. Takes time to get to know campers and create community within the tree group.
- Creates a positive and exciting environment for campers and emulates what it means to be a great role model for young children.
- Encourages imagination and enthusiasm of the camper group. Organizes and provides resources to camper group for free time, tree time, rainy day projects, etc.

Programming & Leadership:

- Encourages by word and example, leadership and teamwork. Understands and works towards the camp vision: to promote leadership in children.
- Participates fully, along with campers, in the various activities during the day. Head Counsellor must also be prepared to assist with or provide leadership in whole camp activities as required.
- Assists with set-up and take-down of activities throughout the day.
- Maintains a friendly, patient, and helpful relationship with co-counsellors and program staff. Maintains an open communication between self and program director.
- Follows supervision schedule. Provides supervision at all times, but especially when on duty (e.g. playground duty at lunch hour).
- Plans and leads “morning movers” and/or “daily wrap up” activities when assigned in the schedule.

Other:

- Is aware of and reports to the head director any safety hazards on the campgrounds. Helps keep the general camping area clean and litter-free.
- Communicates with the director(s) regarding camper health and behaviour. Records any problems or concerns in the communication journal.
- Takes time to reflect on performance and ask for feedback. Seeks out leadership opportunities.
- Is responsible, along with the program team, for the care and wellbeing of all campers.
- All other duties assigned by the program team.
