Position Summary:
Reporting to the IT Operations Manager in the IT Services Unit of the Faculty of Science, the Information Technology (IT) Consultant provides second-level technical support to IT Support Technicians in the delivery of end-user-computing and desktop support services to academic and research staff members. The IT Consultant defines and documents support procedures for end-user-computing activities based on established policies.

Primary Responsibilities:- Assist in the development of basic functionality scripting and support functional and user-acceptance testing.- Install, upgrade, configure and monitor hardware, middleware, and operating systems.- Write, edit and update technical documentation and update changes in IT business processes.- Perform system maintenance including backups, patches, upgrades, restore, etc.- Respond to users and on a variety of requests and define functionality.- Code programs, prepare test data, and test and debug programs.- Provide support services related to the implementation, operation, and maintenance of systems.- Establish and foster effective working relationships by identifying needs and providing support in the delivery of services. Assess and resolve problems. When appropriate, inform supervisor and formulate recommendations.

Additional Responsibilities:
- Leverage provisioning infrastructure to automate the deployment of desktops.- Advise stakeholders on performance and capacity requirements for desktop environments.- Identify areas for improvement in end-user-computing.- Interface with Central IT for the provisioning of centrally managed infrastructure services.- Develop simple scripts to automate repetitive tasks.

Technical skills:
- Operating systems: Windows, MacOS, Linux- Advanced troubleshooting of configuration and hardware issues-
- Diagnosis and remediation of desktop/workstation performance problems-
- Knowledge of security best practices for desktop/workstation environments-
- Troubleshooting of file ownership and permissions problems-
- Networking- Provisioning and troubleshooting network services including CIFS/NFS, Mail, Web, DNS, LDAP.-
- Basic network performance troubleshooting-
- VPNs and network tunneling-
- Storage and backups- Ability to analyze desktop and small server workloads, and suggest a data protection approach-
- Troubleshooting issues with backup infrastructure-
- Provision volumes and file systems on networked file servers and NAS devices-
- Applications development and support- Basic programming experience in any modern languageOther skills:
- Client-focused and service-oriented with a high level of professionalism, discretion and the ability to build constructive work relationships with a variety of clients including professors, staff and students.- Proven ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.- Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task.- Demonstrated ability to take initiative and problem-solve while remaining calm under pressure.- Excellent communication, writing and documentation skills.- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, assess and resolve problems.- Experience working in a laboratory environment is an asset.- Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level #3 on a scale of 0-4.
