**Position Description**:
**Temporary Assignment - approximately 35 weeks**

**SUMMARY**:
As a member of the multidisciplinary team, the Mental Health Support Worker (MHSW) will be responsible for working with patients with mental health crisis and / or behavior disturbances. Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the MHSW will contribute to the optimal function of the unit and to participate in patient care under the direction of clinical staff, while promoting maintenance of the therapeutic milieu. While assigned primarily to a home unit on Acute Mental Health (M1), the MHSW will have the opportunity to work across the acute mental health (AMH) service at Charlton and/or West 5th campuses as well as in the community. This position involves direct clinical service delivery to inpatient clients of AMH, in order to support recovery services based on established best practices and supports the overall unit functioning. The MHSW will contribute to and participate in the care and assessment of designated patients and accompany patients for diagnostic tests and for other transfers as deemed necessary. In addition to communicating both verbally and in writing behavioral observations, assessments and patient’s response to care interventions, the MHSW will assume an active role in maintaining both dynamic and static security elements of the program and service.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- 2 year College diploma or undergraduate degree in related healthcare field (eg: psychology, developmental services worker, sociology, etc)
- CPR required
- Non-Violent Crisis training (CPI)
- Minimum of 1-year clinical experience in mental health preferred, including concurrent disorders, dual-diagnosis, etc).
- Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a busy environment
- Motivated team player that shows initiative
- Effective organizational, problem-solving and communication skills, both written and verbal
- Familiarity with clinical care setting and issues specific to mental health setting required

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Monitor and observe patients for signs of escalating behavior; intervene as necessary using CPI techniques in collaboration with the care team
- Participate in conducting security / safety checks of new arrivals into the department, with the assistance of Security Services as deemed necessary. Perform routine environmental scans and observational rounds
- Participate in team meetings and provide relevant information to primary nurse/ charge nurse/psychiatrist
- Assist in accompanying appropriate patient transfers and discharges
- Engage patients and families around the process of visiting the unit
- Conducts appropriate recordkeeping/documentation for electronic health record, as well as statistical data entry

Support with general inpatient activities such as group facilitation, meal times, urgent situations, and event coordination- Provides ongoing psychosocial support using effective communication skills with patients, family and interprofessional team
- Supports physical patient care as needs arise that may include at the direction of or through delegation by the assigned nurse including but not limited to assisting with lifting, turning, transferring, taking vital signs, clinical monitoring, transporting and ambulating; providing or assisting with personal care, providing ongoing comfort measures to the patient e.g. bed making, conversing, etc.- Other duties as assigned within scope of practice and training provided
