The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is a national research facility of the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules, and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions.

The Mid-IR beamline utilizes synchrotron and laser-based sources to provide researchers with high brilliance infrared light primarily for imaging and mapping at the diffraction limit. At the beamline, new experiments and techniques realizing these advantages require continual research and development support for an ever-widening range of experimental configurations. With state-of-the-art FTIR spectrometers and multiple microscope endstations, both custom and commercial, the beamline provides a suite of tools to allow infrared research in Health, Agriculture, Environment and Materials sciences.

**Responsibilities**

The breadth of research on the Mid-IR Beamline requires a strong technical background, and robust data analysis skills to facilitate such unique experiments. This role requires a combination of technical skills, problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of users and stakeholders. It also involves a strong commitment to safety and adherence to facility standards and procedures.
- Provides **User Support** to general users, beamteam members, fee-for-service clients, and CLS staff. Assists with the following functions:

- Beamline and endstation setup
- Assists with sample preparation and trains users on how to operate beamline.
- User support beyond normal working hours in accordance with established CLS procedures.
- Measurements and data analysis.
- **Beamline and Endstation Setup**: Assist in setting up beamlines and endstations for experiments, ensuring they are configured correctly for specific scientific needs.
- **Sample Preparation**: Help with sample preparation and train users to operate the beamline equipment properly and safely.
- **After-Hours Support**: Be available to assist users beyond normal working hours, adhering to established CLS procedures for off-hours support.
- **Problem Solving**: Analyze and solve beamline or technical problems and provide recommendations for solutions.
- **Preventative Maintenance**: Perform routine preventative maintenance on beamline equipment and instruments, following standard procedures or under the guidance of a supervisor.
- **Documentation**: Prepare and maintain documentation related to the beamline, ensuring it complies with CLS standards, relevant codes, standards, and practices. Seek approval from a supervisor when necessary.
- **Software Maintenance**: Assist in maintaining software systems used at the beamlines and help define software specifications. In some cases, participate in programming and troubleshooting of new software.
- **Lab Book and Log Books**: Maintain a detailed lab book to record relevant information and oversee the tracking and maintenance of beamline log books.
- **Inventory Management**: Stock the beamline and laboratories with necessary supplies, track inventory levels, and ensure that the beamline area is clean and organized.
- **Incident Reporting**: Report incidents and non-conformances according to CLS guidelines and safety protocols.
- **Scientific Outreach**: Provide scientific tours and group briefings and develop materials for scientific presentations, contributing to the facility's educational and outreach efforts.

**Qualifications**:

- A relevant Master’s degree or Ph.D. in the natural sciences.
- A minimum of two years of directly related experience with a Master’s degree, or a minimum one year related experience with a recently completed and relevant Ph.D.
- Prior knowledge about Infrared and Vibrational spectroscopy is required.
- Experience using microscopes, laser-based systems, and optics would be an asset.
- Basic programming skills in python would be an asset, but is not required.

**Remuneration**: Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefits package, including supplemental health & dental, life insurance, health spending account, relocation allowance, and 4 weeks vacation, is part of a competitive compensation package.

**Salary Range**: The Salary Range is $63,580 - $86,020.
