Mechanical Pulping Manager

Port Alberni, Canada Catalyst Paper Corp Full time

You are accountable for everything that happens in the mill, Peroxide Bleach Plant, and chip distribution system, including the safety, housekeeping, production, direct cost, indirect cost, and personnel issues. Your goal should primarily focus on the long term success of the Mechanical Pulp mill as it relates to the mill as a whole. You will need to develop a team of Operations Specialists, Process Engineers and Shift Supervisors to handle both short and long term issues, make operational improvements, and develop operators 1-2 levels above their current position.
- Responsible for safety in your area. Address safety concerns by your operators, maintenance staff, and salaried staff as possible. Hold safety meetings with the team, and actively participate and encourage hazard recognition, use of FHA's, and safety observations to focus the team on safety.
- Focus on long-term sustainability and improvements. This includes capital and non-capital improvements. Set a vision for the department with stretch, but attainable objectives.
- Focus on daily operations: lost tons (reasons), productivity, direct cost (wood, steam, chemicals), maintenance/M&S/operating materials spending. Make sure your team is focused on these important spending areas, but don't let them get so focused on spending that they don't fix what needs to be fixed.
- Make sure the department is adhering to a planning and scheduling process that focuses on planned work, and set criteria that will minimize break-in and emergency work.
- Make sure each area within the department is maintaining a current Top 5 chronic issues list based on data, and that there are plans (capital and non-capital) to kill those chronic issues. Issues are the items that cause downtime and/or excessive and repeated spending.
- Work with the mill and department reliability engineer to make sure you are on the same page as to what your top reliability issues are and how you are going to get them addressed.
- Work with operations specialists, shift supervisors, and operators in your area to make sure issues are being brought to your attention and are getting addressed after small problems become big issues.
- Set the shift supervisors' expectations as to what you want to see each day. Hold alignment meetings throughout the year to make sure your team is aligned with department goals.
- Respond to operational emergencies in your area as they arise, and make sure your team is properly resourcing any issues that develop. Don't be the one who responds to every call - make sure your team is handling their business. You are the “coach”, and you will hold people accountable to execute plans to resolve.
- Follow up and resolve any environmental incidents and recordings for your area.
- Communicate mill issues/opportunities to the departmental team. Communicate any issues in your area up through the Operations Manager/Mill Manager. Communicate with the Department Managers in other operating areas of the mill.
- Hold operators, operations specialists, and shift supervisors accountable in your department. Conduct disciplinary action when appropriate.
- Work with Paper Excellence technical resources and outside contractors/consultants to make continuous improvements to the operation of the department. You are the spearhead for making sure there are checklists, operating procedures, troubleshooting guidelines, and precision operation elements in place.
- Coordinate any outside resources for resolution of chronic issues as necessary.
- Lead planning and budgeting efforts of maintenance outage activities.
- Make sure operations specialists and shift supervisors are engaged and have an active development and certification plan for all operators so that operators are certified 1-2 levels above their current position.
- Meet with the department Union leadership on an ongoing basis to resolve any issues that arise. Develop a sense of cooperation and engagement in the working environment.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
- Post Secondary education in Technical or Managerial field
- Five to Ten (5-10) year's pulp and paper experience.
- Five to Ten (5-10) years' supervisory experience.
- Combination of equivalent experience and education.
- Proven Leadership competency
- Effective and professional communication skill
