**Position Status**:Temporary or Student Placement (37 hours per week)
**Placement**: February 2023 - June 2023
**A living allowance of $1,500 per month will be provided**

**Nature & Scope**:
As a branch of the YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford, the YMCA Employment and Immigrant Services branch delivers Employment Services, Youth Initiatives, Literacy and Basic Skills, Summer and Part time Employment Experience Programs, Youth Outreach and Immigrant and Settlement Programs.

In partnership with Commonwealth Sport Canada. the YMCA is seeking for a SportWORKS Officer Intern that is passionate about sport and what sport can do for newcomer youth in Canada. The SportWORKS Officer Intern will provide leadership and create networks with existing sport organization in Hamilton and surrounding areas to remove barriers that prevent newcomer youth from participating in sports in Canada.

**Responsibilities**:

- Develop an effective program promotion strategy to reach out to newcomer immigrant and refugee youth
- Impart knowledge through 1-on-1 sessions or through group training sessions
- Use systems and software, including: Windows OS, MS Office & Outlook, presentation and database management software
- Take part in a 2-day SportWORKS training session in Ottawa at the House of Sport on March 30 & 31, 2023
- Review of potential community resources for sports programming in Hamilton including review of any/all existing resources compiled for previous S4N programming.
- Compile information into a document that can be accessed by YMCA Youth Settlement Workers and other organization partners
- Work with Youth Settlement staff to develop and deliver a presentation on Barriers to Accessing Sport, with a focus on specific challenges faced by low-income families.
- Work with Youth Settlement staff to develop and deliver 10 Sports Programs, with a culminating activity. These programs should focus on developing skills and eliminating the barriers faced by low-income families, including any intersecting barriers
- Data collection and review of program satisfaction surveys
- Will be required to execute programs and events

**Qualifications**:

- Ability to speak English fluently is required.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and in writing.
- An ability to interact with a variety of stakeholders from diverse populations, including immigrants and refugees, while practicing cultural sensitivity and awareness.
- Ability to handle confidential client documentation.
- Basic customer service skills are required.
- Facilitation skills and strong knowledge of recreational programming.
- Knowledge of community organizations and Sports Programs
- Experience with newcomer youth and challenges faced by newcomers is an asset
- Ability to communicate in Arabic or Somali is an asset.
