The Indigenous Relations Consultant works with City departments and external partners to improve access to programs and services and support Indigenous peoples who work, live and connect in the City of Edmonton. You will also be responsible to:

- Provide content expertise and support to City Council and Civic Administration in the development and delivery of strategies and initiatives which improve the liveability of Indigenous Peoples in Edmonton
- Establish and lead corporate working teams, facilitate conversations with Indigenous Leaders and/or Elders and associated organizations; build relationships, partnerships and advance the City’s strategic goals
- Broker the development and implementation of responses and resolutions to issues/opportunities identified through discussions with internal and external working groups
- Participate in Indigenous and other outreach activities, representing the City, while supporting the development and implementation of a variety of partner driven initiatives
- Lead and participate in the delivery of internal and external initiatives and projects as assigned (i.e. Reconciliation initiatives, Métis Day, Treaty Six Recognition Day)
- Provide advice and guidance to various Indigenous organizations on a regular basis in the development of work plans and associated activities with a focus on capacity within the Indigenous community
- Provide expertise and support to Indigenous organizations in creating financial models, funding agreements and associated business plans
- Provide expertise, analysis, and leadership regarding contemporary issues in regards to federal/provincial legislation/policy and associated guidelines
- Lead and advise on strategies related to the implementation of the Duty to Consult and other forms of Indigenous engagement with First Nations, Métis communities and representative organizations on City-led projects.
- Compile comprehensive and accurate demographic and needs data, best practice research; provide input on the City’s perspective in the development of strategy/policy development for Indigenous initiatives
- Create information packaging and improve dissemination of information to Indigenous communities, City staff and Councillors through public engagement activities
- Liaise with other municipalities and jurisdictions and leverage information sharing
- Write Council reports, briefings, newsletters, prepare web content, etc.

**Qualifications**:

- A Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Political Science, Native Studies or equivalent Social Sciences Field. Masters in Public Administration or Business Administration would be an asset.
- A minimum of 7 years progressively responsible and professional inter-cultural experience working with Indigenous groups, including community development activities, and working with non profit organizations
- Significant understanding of Indigenous communities, their histories, cultures, and current environment. Personal value base compatible with equity, diversity and inclusion principles, GBA+, and human rights advocacy
- Knowledge of UNDRIP, Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Calls for Justice
- Knowledge of “duty to consult” principles and understanding how to apply
- Understanding of, and experience related to Indigenous community demographics and the associated cultural and intercultural practices that are part of the diverse Edmonton Indigenous communities and how to implement cultural practices into the work of the corporation
- Knowledge and experience of community development strategies and approaches
- Ability to plan, coordinate and provide oversight to complex projects, documents, and events. Particularly projects/initiatives that involve Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Community Leaders and Political/Administrative leaders
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including report writing along with strong facilitation and presentation skills.

- Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions
- Ability to effectively gather, synthesize, integrate, and interpret information from a wide-range of sources and perspectives and communicate effectively to both community and corporate leaders
