Job Summary
The Sub-Head Tradesperson organizes, directs, and participates in the work of an assigned area and/or crew of trades, such as Plumbers, Electricians, Controls specialists, Steamfitters, Maintenance Mechanics and other skilled workers engaged in maintenance and installation work on Student Housing and Community Services (SHCS) facilities; costing jobs and ordering required materials.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Trades Manager, Facilities and Building Services.
Work Performed- Supervises, organizes and allocates the work of an assigned crew of trades, such as Plumbers, Electricians, Controls specialists, Steamfitters and other skilled workers.- Addresses day-to-day on-site problems by initiating appropriate corrective actions.- Ensures that employees under his/her jurisdiction work in a correct and safe manner and in accordance with all normal safety standards and practices and university and departmental policies and procedures.- Participates in or performs the work of assigned trades as required.- Ensures work is completed in accordance with requirements, specifications, and applicable codes.- Responds to trouble calls and emergencies during and outside normal work hours.- Works in compliance with applicable codes, instructions, and safety regulations in accordance with work orders, drawings, documents and time schedules.- Communicates with customers and co-workers as required to ensure the efficient delivery of service.- Schedules and performs preventative (PM) and breakdown maintenance.- Prepares cost estimates for jobs and orders required materials.- Supervises and participates in training of workers/apprentices as necessary.- Maintains work function related records, such as, timekeeping, costing, tools, equipment, work assignments, (PM) schedules and test inspection reports.- Tests and repairs fire protection systems.- Attends training and other workshops as required to maintain current knowledge of safety codes as they pertain to the specific mechanical trade.- Ensures workplace compliance with the BC Safety Authority's Safety Standards Act.- Performs inspections and signs permits as required.- Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Makes decisions regarding the organization and allocation of trades and other skilled workers and acceptability of work performed for assigned area and/or crew; inappropriate decisions may result in poor quality work, service delays, additional costs and possible safety issues.
Supervision Received
Works under general supervision and from oral and written instructions, work orders, drawings and specifications.
Supervision Given
Organizes, allocates and supervises an assigned crew of various building related trades and other skilled workers.
Minimum Qualifications
A trade certification to journeyperson level as a Plumber or Steamfitter, a valid BC driver’s license and a minimum five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications- Training and familiarity in the work of other trades.- Experience in fire protection systems testing and repairing.- Current knowledge of plumbing and safety codes, back check valves, regulations, standards and practices.- Ability to work various shifts. Must be able to respond at short notice to emergency calls outside working hours.- Ability to work independently and effectively with minimum supervision.- Ability to effectively use standard office software packages (Microsoft Office) and controller programming software.- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.- Knowledge of Student Housing and Hospitality Services operations, procedures and processes is an asset.
