**Doctorate project opportunity in economic geology on metallogeny and geologic controls of the Detour Lake gold deposit, NE Ontario**

We are seeking a talented, motivated student to undertake a Ph.D. thesis in economic geology on the geologic controls and metallogeny of the Detour Lake gold deposit, Ontario. The thesis project is sponsored by the Geological
Survey of Canada (GSC)-Targeted Geoscience Initiative (TGI), in collaboration with Agnico Eagle Limited and the
Mineral Exploration Research Center (MERC), at Laurentian University, Sudbury, Ontario.

**Project Description**:The Abitibi greenstone belt contains the largest portion of Canada’s gold budget and remains a prime exploration target. Research to date provided an in-depth understanding of the gold systems but several knowledge gaps remain regarding the genesis, controls, and precise timing of mineralization, especially in the northern part of the belt.

The PhD thesis research project will study the geological setting and genesis of the Detour Lake deposit in order to improve both the geological and exploration models. The main objectives of the thesis are to: (1) Characterize the gold mineralization styles and events including their origins, timing, host rocks, and alteration footprint, (2) unravel the geological and structural controls on mineralization and high-grade ore shoots, including their relationships to the Sunday Lake deformation zone; and (3) integrate results and contribute to produce a geological and metallogenic model of the Detour Lake-Fenelon Gold Belt.

**Supervision**: The thesis will be co-supervised by Sébastien Castonguay (GSC-Quebec) and Ross Sherlock (MERC) with support from Agnico Eagle geologists.

**Funding**: The student will be supported by a GSC Research Affiliate Program (RAP) bursary for three academic years
(25k$/year), with additional support by the host university and Agnico Eagle Limited (scholarship or casual employment).

**Who can apply**: Preference will be given to persons residing in Canada and Canadian citizens residing abroad. To be considered, you must also meet the following criteria:
►hold a master’s degree in Geology or Earth sciences from a recognized Canadian or foreign university.
►Knowledge of fundamental geosciences disciplines with advanced knowledge in structural geology, igneous petrology, and metallogeny related to gold mineralization.
►Knowledge and pertinent study/fieldwork experience in gold ore system, such as orogenic and intrusion
- associated gold deposits.
►Knowledge and pertinent experience for gathering, managing and analyzing data in a geographic information system (GIS) and 3D modeling software.

Les recherches menées jusqu'à présent ont permis de comprendre les systèmes aurifères, mais plusieurs lacunes subsistent en ce qui concerne la genèse, les contrôles et la chronologie précise de la minéralisation, en particulier dans la partie septentrionale de la ceinture.

Le projet de recherche de la thèse de doctorat étudiera le cadre géologique et la genèse du gisement de Detour Lake afin d'améliorer les modèles géologiques et d'exploration. Les principaux objectifs de la thèse sont les suivants (1) caractériser les styles et les événements de minéralisation aurifère, y compris leurs origines, leur chronologie, les roches hôtes et l'empreinte de l'altération, (2) démêler les contrôles géologiques et structuraux sur la minéralisation et les corridors à haute teneur, y compris ses relations avec la zone de déformation de Sunday Lake, et (3) intégrer les résultats et contribuer à produire un modèle géologique et métallogénique de la ceinture aurifère de Detour
