The division includes: the Office of the Chief Inspector of Mines; the Mine Audits and Strategic Services Branch; the Abandoned Mines Branch; the Regulatory Management and Enforcement Branch and the Code Review Secretariat.

The Inspector of Mines, Health and Safety Specialist is a ministry professional and expert on mine health and safety and for ensuring compliance and enforcement of health and safety under the delegated authority of the Mines Act and the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines (HSR Code) in British Columbia. The position, along with the Senior Health and Safety Specialist, leads and supports health and safety risk-based strategies and projects. The position supports and promotes compliance by influencing industry, providing educational resources, developing innovative health and safety solutions, developing mine health and safety awards and participating in regulatory development.

**JOB REQUIREMENTS**
**Education & Experience**

**Note**: Experience must include ensuring compliance with health and safety regulatory and policy requirements including a variety of topic areas such as occupational health, electrical and mechanical safety, and ergonomics and complex health and safety issues;
- Post-secondary degree in engineering, occupational health and safety, public or business administration, natural resource management, environmental sciences, or related field, AND minimum 2 years of related experience in health and safety or regulating health and safety OR.
- Diploma in engineering, occupational health and safety, public or business administration, natural resource management, environmental sciences, or related field AND minimum 5 years of related experience in health and safety or regulating health and safety OR
- An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may also be considered.
- Experience in regulatory compliance or regulatory oversight roles with demonstrated knowledge of regulatory compliance authorities, processes, and practices.
- Experience interpreting and analyzing data related to health and safety management.
- Experience in concisely and persuasively writing a range of documents/content, including educational materials, executive level briefings, formal reports and policies and procedures.
- Experience working in health and safety within a mining or heavy industry environment.
- Experience managing and completing complex projects.
- Experience conducting research including developing a research plan, compiling results, analyzing data, and preparing a summary report with findings and recommendations.
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent).

Proviso:

- May be required to occasionally work evenings and weekends and be exposed to incident scenes involving serious injuries and fatalities.
- Must be willing to testify at hearings and trials.
- Must be available to travel by air, fixed wing, helicopter and overnight on short notice.
- Must be able to climb ladders, walk up and down steep ramps, work underground, use and be fitted for appropriate protective equipment in environments where exposure to chemical vapours, noise, dust, heat and cold are present.

Successful completion of security screening requirements of the BC Public Service, which may include a criminal records check, and/or Criminal Records Review Act (CRRA) check, and/or enhanced security screening checks as required by the ministry (Note: It is important that you read the job posting carefully to understand the specific security screening requirements pertaining to the position).
