**Job Profile**:
The Law Clerk will provide support to the City Solicitor and the Assistant City Solicitors, especially in the area of real estate, planning and related transactions and services. The Law Clerk is responsible for providing a wide range of legal services concerned with the acquisition and disposal of land; title searching; Teraview operations; the registration of land development and other planning-related agreements and review of planning related by-laws. Will respond to other City departments and external sources relating to real property and development matters, including requests for title searches from other City departments.

Demonstrates a high level of professionalism with good judgment and the ability to deal with highly sensitive issues with confidentiality, tact and discretion.

**What you will be doing**:
Real Estate:

- Oversees the completion of all real estate transactions, including drafting correspondence, searches of title, sub-searches, approval of forms, negotiation with solicitors and third parties, conducting due diligence activities, preparing electronic documents and completing registrations, and providing full reports on closings.
- Assists with expropriation procedures to ensure compliance with the Expropriations Act.
- Performs searches, prepares and co-ordinates the registration of Encroachment Agreements.
- In co-ordination with the Realty Services Division performs searches and drafts documents related to Easement Agreements.

Development:

- In co-ordination with the Planning Division searches and drafts Site Plan Agreements for registration.
- Reviews and registers planning related by-laws.

General Legal Duties:

- Drafts agreements for various departments as required under legislation for execution by the City and third parties.
- Responds to other City departments and external sources relating to real property and development matters, including requests for title searches from other City departments.
- Participates in formulation of policies and procedures relevant to practice area, including procurement and land disposition issues.
- Prepares draft by-laws for presentation to lawyers and other City staff.

**Education**:
Possess a diploma from a two-year Community College Legal Assistant (Law Clerk) course, or Certification by the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario, or equivalent acceptable combination of experience and education.

**Experience and Knowledge**:

- Requires decision making based on interpretation of legislation, City by-laws, policies and procedures.
- 4 years of Legal Assistant / Law Clerk experience, preferably in the area of property and planning law.
- Excellent computer skills, eg. Teraview, MS Office, GIS, Internet
- Proficient communication, research and analytical skills.
- Requires the ability to manage all aspects of a real estate transaction through knowledge of Teraview document preparation, registration and title searching, ability to read and report title searches, review and preparation of requisitions and closing documents as well as related correspondence.
- Demonstrates effective planning and problem-solving skills; excellent interpersonal, organizational skills and the ability to multi-task and prioritize work effectively.
- Requires an ability to interpret applicable legislation, Provincial and Federal Statutes and Municipal By-laws.
- Requires the ability to work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.

**Your compensation**:
This position is within Grade 3 of the Non-Union Salary Schedule and has an annual salary range of $69,296 - $84,508. We offer a comprehensive benefits package and are an Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) employer.

**Hours of work**:
The current regular hours of work are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 pm. (35 hours per week), Monday to Friday.
