Journeyperson Machinist

The Journeyperson Machinist’s key responsibilities are to set up and operate a variety of machine tools to cut or grind metal, plastic or other materials to make or modify parts or products with precise dimensions. The Journeyperson Machinist may also perform duties within his/her capabilities in addition to those identified in this job description. He/she must work well independently or in a team environment and provide analyses/recommendations directly to the Machine Shop Foreman.
**Main Duties**:
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, charts and tables or study sample parts to determine the machining operation to be performed, and plan the best sequence of operations
- Compute dimensions and tolerances and measure and lay out work pieces
- Set up, operate and maintain a variety of machine tools including computer numerically controlled (CNC) tools to perform precision, non-repetitive machining operations such as sawing, turning, milling, boring, planning, drilling, precision grinding and other operations
- Fit and assemble machined metal parts and subassemblies using hand and power tools
- Verify dimensions of products for accuracy and conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments
- May set up and program machine tools for use by machining tool operators
- Accurate and timely completion of assigned tasks is an integral part of the work
- Record hours and materials on timecards to satisfy QA requirements
- Encourage and instruct apprentices
- Other duties within the incumbent’s capabilities as required
**Requirements**:
- Be able to work shift work and overtime as required, paid travel may be necessary
- Be able to pay attention to detail
- Have excellent communication skills
- Marine experience would be an asset
**HSEQ Responsibilities**:
- Carry out work in accordance with established procedures
- Participate in the Act of Vigilance (AOV) program
- Report failures to meet requirements (nonconformances) and identify opportunities to improve
- All personnel are responsible for complying with regulatory and corporate HSE and Quality requirements, including those related to product and the protection of people and the environment
**Qualifications and Competency Requirements**:
- Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in the marine environment
- Completion of 7200-hour Machinist Program
- Red Seal Journeyperson Machinist certification
- Have a valid driver’s license
