Job Summary

The Department of Psychiatry is one of the largest departments in the Faculty of Medicine with over 1,000 department members including academic faculty, clinical faculty, academic visitors, fellows, student employees, staff and volunteers. The Department's academic faculty is a mix of academic clinicians and basic scientists with significant research programs working at various locations and sites under a variety of computing environments and infrastructures. The Department's medical education program offices are located at the Diamond Centre supporting one of the most widely distributed education programs within the Faculty of Medicine with faculty appointees and trainees located within all six (6) health authorities across BC. The Department's Administration Office is located within the UBC Hospital footprint, Point Grey Campus.

The Computer Systems Manager is responsible for the Department server administration, coordinated end user support for Psychiatry network users and the development, implementation, maintenance and communication of IT policies and procedures that ensure network stability, security and an optimal computing environment for users and in support of Department operations. The incumbent consults with users and teams in developing and implementing IT solutions. This role coordinates the implementation of user, team, Department, Faculty-wide or UBC-wide IT initiatives and upgrades consulting with users, stakeholders, project management teams, IT personnel and vendors (internal and external to UBC) and Department Administrative staff ensuring maximum benefit, efficient use of resources and effective communication.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Director of Administration. This position works with considerable latitude in identifying and implementing IT solutions. Work is reviewed in terms of meeting the position responsibilities, goals, and objectives.

The position works collaboratively with the Manager of Communications & Partnerships in the development, and management of communication initiatives for Department. Attends Monthly Department Manager Meetings. Meets regularly with Director of Administration.

Consults with and works collaboratively with Department members, FoM Digital Solutions, UBC IT and other units as required to ensure effective implementation of IT solutions.

Supervises IT staff (M&P Level A). Selects and supervises contractors (network cabling, temporary staff etc.) as well as students and volunteers.

Has authority and responsibility for ensuring vendor delivery of contracted services and products.

Work Performed- Responsible for the Department network administration and coordinated desktop support for networked users; manages central network, server systems and user access, including antimalware and other software updates, inventory, software update distribution, DNS and DHCP servers;- Develops, communicates and implements IT policies and procedures that ensure network stability, security and optimal computing environment for users- Maintains license and inventory control of computer equipment and software; Monitors and manages system security to prevent unauthorized access to restricted information- Coordinates with units external to Department as well as vendors to ensure networking infrastructure is stable and maintained (i.e. ensure uninterrupted network connectivity, web server, electronic file storage and backups, virtual servers and DHCP servers, cabling upgrades, wireless access, etc.)- Coordinates the implementation of user, team, Department, Faculty-wide or UBC-wide IT initiatives and upgrades; acts as key liaison between project team members and department members; liaises with UBC IT and Digital Solutions and consults with users, stakeholders, project management teams, IT personnel and vendors (internal and external to UBC) and Department Administrative staff ensuring minimum disruption to Department operations, maximum benefit, efficient use of resources and effective communication; carries out pre and post-project assessment and reporting- Develops systems for specific projects; consults with users and teams
