At the Department of Public Works, we manage 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges across Nova Scotia. Our District Highway Operations Division plays a critical role in managing snow and ice control services, road maintenance and repair services throughout the province.

**About Our Opportunity**:
As the Financial Administration Student, you will gain practical financial experience and receive training and mentorship from highly qualified public service professionals. **Primary Accountabilities**:
You will assist staff with financial and administrative duties, which support the highway operations and contribute to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the Division by:

- Assisting with research and analysis;
- Supporting staff with their daily work;
- Database entry and support;
- Organizing, filing, and preparing documents; and
- Performing reception duties, covering the Secretary for breaks and time-off (includes manning a dual line switchboard, coordinating mail, printing invoices and directing visitors.

There may be opportunity for you to participate in and collaborate with various staff on special projects or assignments; helping you further enhance and develop your skills.

**Qualifications and Experience**:
You must currently be a student enrolled in Accounting, commerce, business administration or a related discipline and returning to school in the fall (or in the next applicable semester for the education program).
- knowledge and expertise in administrative processes, cost accounting, inventory control, accounts payable/receivable, preparation and analysis of financial statements and reports, budgeting and expenditure control;
- excellent computer skills and proficiency with spreadsheets, word processing software packages and transaction processing;
- strong interpersonal skills and an ability to provide financial services to clients and work in a team environment. Sound judgement is required for analyzing and interpreting operating and budget data;
- organizational skills and the ability to prioritize your work; and
- the ability to be flexible and open to working on a variety of tasks as required.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

**Working Conditions**:

- Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day paid, working 8:30am - 4:30pm with two 15 minute breaks and ½ hour for lunch.
- Typically located in a comfortable office environment, occasional work in the maintenance bases may be required.
- Much of the time is spent in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about.
- Regularly reads and interprets multiple sources of information, regular requirement to type, read and work on a computer.
- May experience pressure with deadlines and need for accuracy.

**Additional Information**:
There is one (1) position available based out of Bedford.

This opportunity will start approximately May 1, 2024 with an end date of August 30, 2024.

**Pay Grade**:_ _HOURLY

**Salary Range**:_ _$17.34 - $28.26 Hourly
