Field, Canada Burgess Shale Geoscience Foundation Full time

**Description of Work**:
A seasonal guide with the Burgess Shale Geoscience Foundation, guides clients to the world renowned fossil sites known collectively as the Burgess Shale. We guide to two of the sites, both of which are situated in Yoho National Park: The Mt. Stephen Trilobite beds and the Walcott Quarry.

Mt Stephen Trilobite Beds: 7 kms round trip with 800m of elevation gain. Typically takes 7 - 8 hours to guide.

Walcott Quarry: 22 kms round trip with 800m elevation gain and typically takes 9 - 13 hours to guide.

Lectures and interpretive presentations on geoscience, bioscience, and evolution are provided by the guide en-route to the fossil site(s).

The compensation is a per diem rate of $450 CAD for the Walcott hike, and $350 CAD for the Mt Stephen hike.

We provide WCB, commercial liability insurance, and mentorship. Staff accommodation is not provided.

**Job Requirements**:

- Be physically fit and able to lead a group of 12 hikers in the mountains, 12 hours a day for multiple days in a row.
- Be enthusiastic and outgoing.
- Minimum of a Geoscience, Bioscience, or Environmental Science undergraduate degree.
- Minimum of a valid Standard First Aid / CPR-C certification.
- Minimum of an Apprentice Interpreter & Hiking Guide certificate attained through the Interpretive Guides Association (IGA), and an IGA Group Management certificate, or be willing to attain these two certificates before the start of the hiking season. Must be a member in good standing with the IGA.

OR

Minimum of an ACMG Assistant Hiking Guide certificate. Must be a member in good standing with the ACMG.
- Willingness to attend a 2-day training session in June in Field, BC (at a lower per diem rate).
- Willingness to work as a volunteer tail guide for two days at the beginning of the season prior to becoming a paid guide. In other words, willingness to make oneself available for two un-paid training days.
- Willingness to wear a uniform that clearly identifies the guide as working for the BSGF.
- Eligibility to work in Canada.
- Knowledge of the geology and botany of the Rocky Mountains. Knowledge of the paleontology of the Burgess Shale.
- Must possess valid provincial medical insurance or equivalent coverage.
- Must have own vehicle for commuting to and from Field and to the trail head.
- Must have a cell phone with a plan.
- Is an outdoor enthusiast who is passionate about geoscience, bioscience, and evolution, and would like to share that knowledge with others.
- Possesses practical mountain sense attained through many backcountry and wilderness mountain trips.
- Possesses a 90-120 hour Wilderness First Aid or Non Urban Emergency Care certificate.
- Has Professional Interpreter IGA certification or full ACMG Hiking Guide certification.
- Has previous guiding experience, preferably in a mountain setting.
- Has previous industry experience as a geologist, biologist, ecologist, etc.
