Primary function
The specialist will plan, organize, and co-lead the adjudication of LAO’s disability and attendance management programs including short and long term disability plans, accommodation requests and return to work plans. Reporting to the Director, Human Resources, you will work closely with the Benefits and Attendance Management Specialist to ensure consistency and accuracy for all claims in a timely manner.
Key accountabilities
- Support the adjudication of LAO’s short term disability programs, coordinate accommodation plans, return to work plans, and prepare decision letters
- Provide advice to, and work with HR Business Partners, managers, employees, and labour relations representatives in the management and coordination of disability and attendance management at LAO.
- Provide consultation to employees regarding available disability management services and responsibilities in the workplace accommodation process.
- Communicate with employees and managers regarding the status of claims and return to work planning
- Proactively management of disability claims including situations of a complex nature.
- Administer requirements for HR systems, processes for all aspects of disability and attendance management to ensure all transactional steps are processed in a timely fashion.
- Responsible for maintaining historical records and ensuring record keeping is accurate.
- Remain current with applicable workplace legislation and jurisprudence in the field of disability/attendance management and accommodations

Required skills & experience

- University degree, and completion of a recognized post-secondary Human Resources program or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Professional accreditation (CCP, CHRP) would be asset.
- Solid background of administration of group short term disability and long term disability administration including experience in the management of complex disability claims in a unionized environment.
- Proficiency with Excel, MS Word, and HR systems (experience with Oracle PeopleSoftHCM is an asset
- Outstanding communication skills (written and verbal) to present information at all levels of the organization
- Ability to effectively manage conflicting situations
- Ability to effectively handle shifting priorities and multi-tasking in a deadline-oriented environment
- Demonstrated facilitation and collaboration skills to drive and deliver results.
- Exceptional attention to detail and finely tuned organizational abilities.
- Maintain professionalism and confidentiality
- Initiative to manage multiple demands under pressure in a fast paced, high volume, multi-faceted environment
