Justice, Legal Services Division, is responsible for providing quality legal advice to the Government of Alberta. **Role Responsibilities**:
Alberta Justice - Legal Services Division - has an opportunity for a Research Analyst to join the Constitutional and Aboriginal Law Team.
- This position is responsible for the provision of a full and comprehensive range of non-legal research advice primarily focusing on Constitutional and Aboriginal Law.
- Provides researched information, analysis, and advice to Legal Services Lawyers in support of the preparation of legal opinions, negotiations and to defend Alberta before the courts in civil litigation matters.
- Meets with legal counsel to determine major issues, scope of research and time frame to complete, making an evaluation of record source needs and their location to complete the task.
- Research is undertaken at Archival institutions such as Library and Archives Canada, Provincial Archives of Alberta, and the Manitoba Provincial Archives, for records pertaining to Federal and Provincial government policy, agreements, land transactions, Aboriginal matters, and the fur trade.
- Researching the historical development of Federal/Provincial legislation to assist legal counsel in understanding the context in which it was developed, the intent and meaning at the time of drafting and enactment.
- Researching history of individual parcels of land identified by legal land description with an understanding of the Alberta Survey System, searches within Alberta Land Titles, plans within the Canada Lands Survey System and the ability to read and understand a wide variety of information contained within maps, current and especially historical.

**Qualifications**:
University graduation in a related field such as Social Sciences - History, Geography, plus 2 years progressively responsible related experience, for example, history and archival research experiences.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience 1 year of experience for 1 year of education**Requirement**:

- Archival research experience. Knowledge of the Alberta Survey System and the National Topographic System (NTS)**Asset**
- Knowledge of Canadian history and historical resources.
- You must be able to work independently with little or no assistance.
