**Oskayak Police Academy - Camp Counsellor**

Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society and Edmonton Police Service are excited to host the eighth annual “Oskayak” (meaning “Youth” in the Cree language) Police Academy (OPA). OPA helps to build stronger, more resilient youth and, more knowledgeable police officers. OPA helps educate Indigenous youth about the EPS and EPS officers about Indigenous youth. They participate in shared experiences learning about practices, protocols, culture, and crime prevention initiatives. The Camp Counselor will perform a variety of tasks in the OPA setting, including recreational activities, arts and crafts, sports, games, and hobbies. A major focus will be on Indigenous cultural activities and crafts.

**Responsibilities**
- Oversees the daily operations of recreational facilities.
- Plans and leads activities such as arts, crafts, sports, games, and hobbies.
- Enforces academy rules and regulations and ensures safety in the recreational facilities.
- Performs first aid following prescribed procedures and contacts emergency medical personnel when required by the situation.
- Demonstrates use of recreational equipment and teaches participants the principles, techniques, and safety procedures for each activity.
- Greets new arrivals and introduces them to others; explains academy and facility rules.
- Report complaints to leadership and works to resolve issues.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Must attend staff meetings and orientation during the summer season.

**Qualification Requirements**
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience working with youth preferred.
- Have strong understanding and/or lived experience of the barriers and challenges that youth from Indigenous communities’ face.
- Must pass reference checks and background screenings.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to learn and enforce the academy's safety and operating rules.

**Physical Requirements**:

- Able to participate in games, sports, and physical activities including water-based games and activities.
- Able to maintain attention and a high level of energy or excitement for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to spend the majority the of time outdoors and tolerate a variety of weather conditions.

**Hourly Wage**:

- Hours: 35 Hours/Week from June 26 - July 31, 2023
- Wage: $20/Hour
