The employer, Canadian Religious Stewardship (CRS) is a not for profit and charitable organization established by Religious Institutes from across Canada. CRS is assisting a small group of Catholic/Christian Sisters based in Nanaimo, British Columbia.
- Benedictine Sisters of Nanaimo_

With an average age of 82 years, this small group of six Sisters are experiencing many changes and transitions and require the services of a Handyperson, Maintenance & Repairs. The Sisters home is surrounded by nature and is located on a large tranquil property on the edge of water.

**Job Type**

Part-time (16-24 hours/week)

**Job Summary**

Reporting to the Benedictines of Nanaimo (BON) Executive Director, the Handyperson is accountable for all aspects of the maintenance and repair tasks at the interior and/or exterior of the Sisters home in Nanaimo. You will be relied upon, and accountable for keeping the property and its facilities in excellent condition by doing various jobs related to maintenance and repairs.

In addition, the Handyperson will work in close collaboration with the Sisters, and other staff members including the Food Services Coordinator and Housekeeper. While most of the Handyperson’s responsibilities will be within regular business hours there may be occasions where the Handyperson is called upon outside of these hours.

**Reporting**

The Handyperson will report to the Executive Director, however the incumbent will be expected to work quite independently, and in close collaboration with the residents with a mínimal amount of supervision.

**Duties**

**Responsibilities include, but are not limited to**:

- Identify and repair deficiencies such as: small drywall holes, taping, mudding, sanding; adding small trim pieces and caulking; adjusting door frames; repairing furniture; preparing walls, ceilings, and floors for general improvement
- Install new doors and shelves
- Painting and wallpapering
- Outdoor work includes: Cutting grass, trimming bushes; pruning fruit trees; planting and removing trees; picking fruit from trees; gutter cleaning; roof inspection; snow removal from walkways as needed
- Ensure the weekly garbage/recycle bins are taken to the road for pick up
- Review all safety standards to ensure compliance
- Make minor repairs to heating, cooling, plumbing, and electrical systems
- Maintain inventory and order supplies and materials as required
- Arrange for sub trades as needed
- Ensure that keys for emergencies are kept in the lock box
- Maintain and submit records, reports or related information to the Executive Director as requested

**Requirements**:

- Excellent knowledge of health and safety requirements
- Previous experience in maintenance/construction or other related field
- Ability and willingness to carry out tasks in line with Safety Policy and Procedures
- Emergency First Aid & CPR considered an asset
- Deadline and detail-oriented
- Self-motivated and able to work with mínimal supervision
- Clear and effective oral and written communication skills in English
- Ability to both follow and give instruction and work collaboratively
- Compassionate, caring, respectful and flexible
- Understanding and support of Catholic/Christian values and religious life of the Sisters
- Valid driver's license and access to a truck as needed
- Physically fit to perform duties
- Sign a Confidentiality Agreement and practice discretion
- Vulnerable Sector Police Check
- Fully immunized per Island Health Regulations

**Salary**: $25.00 per hour

Expected hours: 16 - 24 per week
