We’re looking for a smart and dedicated business journalist who is organized, creative and quick-thinking to help lead our busy team of business reporters across multiple bureaus. The assistant editor will work under the direction of the business editor in Toronto to assign, edit and develop a varied file of hard news, features and consumer-focused stories.
R**esponsibilities**:
- Co-ordinate daily coverage, breaking news and longer-term features for a national business department
- In consultation with the business editor, assign stories to staff with clear expectations about the finished product and shepherd these stories through to publication
- Edit stories throughout the day, including priority files, while keeping an eye out for developing events
- Play a role in staff development through editing, coaching and team problem-solving
- Help reporters develop innovative story ideas and long-term projects
- Work with staff and clients in a constructive and collaborative way
- Generate innovative multimedia ideas to accompany stories, including graphics, audio and video
- Chase breaking news from the desk and co-ordinate and implement news alerts
- Lead by example to foster a culture of open communication, collaboration and strong teamwork
- Have a strong understanding of and interest in business news, including economics, financial services, mergers and acquisitions, energy and personal finance
- Have strong decision-making skills and excellent news judgment.
- Possess excellent time-management and organizational skills
- Have a proven ability to work under extreme deadline pressures
- Generate creative, out-of-the box ideas and draw ideas from others
- Be fleixible and ready to pivot, including reallocating reources when circumstances require
- Know when to take five extra minutes to perfect a headline and when to press the button on urgent stories
- Have professional experience with different platforms, including broadcast, video and multimedia
- Be a meticulous editor, from mastery of the CP Stylebook to catching a buried lede
- Be a self-starter who takes initiative and is unafraid to be innovative
- Have the ability to handle a number of competing demands on deadline
Successful completion of the Canadian Securities Course or other financial statement analysis course would be an asset.

**Responsabilités**:
- Coordonner la couverture quotidienne des nouvelles et des documentaires à plus long terme pour la section nationale de l’économie
