Junior Underwriter

Westland Insurance Group Ltd has an exciting opportunity for a Junior Commercial Underwriter based out of our head office in Surrey, BC. Our in-house Westland Insurance Program (WIP) operates almost identically to that of most insurance corporations and you will underwrite risk and prepare quotes for a wide variety of policies by reviewing related information and determining the acceptability of commercial risks. This position will also play an integral and active role in building relationships with our brokers.

**The Opportunity**:

- Join our team as we successfully evaluate, select, negotiate and price assigned policies in order to insure a profitable book of business, with supportive guidance and resources, within established underwriting authorities
- Gather and assess appropriate risk information from branch offices and internal sales departments and accept or decline submissions based on suitability of risk and market availability
- Utilize loss control and risk management practices in the underwriting process
- Determine eligibility for policy renewals based on guidelines and retention goals of the company
- Develop an underwriting discipline to minimize exposure and appropriately price risks including leveraging risk controls and claims in managing accounts and pre-qualification of prospects
- Contribute to operational decisions with some level of supervision and guidance
- Keep an ongoing awareness and understanding of the marketplace
- Develop and maintain a professional relationship with brokers to enhance understanding of the target market and to contribute to high quality service, problem solving and risk selection
- Develop and maintain a knowledge and understanding of company operations and procedures

**Here's what you bring**:

- Experience working in a commercial underwriting environment, or successful completion of a post-secondary Insurance Educational Program
- Willing to work toward completion of CIP/FCIP/CRM designations
- Ability to work with virtual supervision & guidance from remote teammates
- Self-motivated, with a positive, team-focused and customer-centric attitude
- Strong analytical and organizational skills
- Highly-developed attention to detail and accuracy
- Exemplary oral and written communication skills
