Position Title: Landscape Maintance/Gardener - Canada Summer Jobs Position

Location: 388 Plains Road, Kitchener, ON (Corner of Plains Rd. and Fischer-Hallman)

Status: Temporary (35 hours per week)

Conditions: The position is conditional upon approval of funding under the Canada Summer Jobs Program.

**Salary**: $15.50/hour

Work remotely: No

Position 1 - Start Date: May 1, 2023 End Date: August 18, 2023

Position 2 -Start Date May 1, 2023 End Date : June 23, 2023

**Yog Fellowship Temple - Centre for Kriyayoga Meditation (YFT) is a non-profit centre** established in 1983 where members of the public attend to learn and practice Kriyayoga Meditation, a non-sectarian, practical, scientific technique of worship that everyone can practice regardless of age, gender, religion, or physical condition. YFT is beautifully situated on a scenic, country property in Kitchener and radiates a spiritual ambience immediately experienced by all who enter the premises. The meditation hall is known for its unique architecture, consisting of a geodesic dome beneath a pyramid enclosure that provides an ideal environment conducive for Kriyayoga programs and retreats.

**Main Duties & Responsibilities**:
For the outdoor meditation areas and facility gardens (approximately six acres) and within the principles of biodiversity and respect for all living things that is at the core of Kriyayoga Meditation (guidance and training will be provided):

- Assist with maintenance of walking paths, naturalized grass areas, flower beds, vegetable beds
- Assist with tree and bush care including pruning, weeding, fertilizing, as necessary
- Research and recommend native plant selections
- Preventive management and natural control of non-beneficial plants and insects
- Fertilization and compost management
- Harvest fruit, vegetables, berries
- Watering plants, trees and bushes as needed

Assist with other facility maintenance and cleaning work as needed.

**Qualifications**:
Canada Summer Job Grant Criteria:

- Must be between the ages of 15-30 (inclusive)
- Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
- Must be legally entitled to work according to all relevant Ontario legislation and regulations

Youth who have not previously been employed and for whom this would be their first job experience.

Indigenous, newcomer/refugees, disabled, visible minorities/racialized

however, ALL qualified youth are encouraged to apply.

**Skills**:

- Self-directed and comfortable working alone
- Ability to do physical work in an outdoor environment
- Ability to operate light garden and maintenance equipment and tools (training provided)
- Ability to follow safety procedures and protocols (training provided)
- Ability to research and suggest improvements to grounds maintenance processes and native plant selections

Qualities:

- Consistent, conscientious, and reliable
- Respect for the environment and the natural world
- Interests or study in the areas of theology, ecology, environmental protection, biodiversity, or horticulture (preferred)
