Job Description Summary

The Infant Studies Centre at UBC is a dynamic, interdisciplinary research centre in the Department of Psychology. The focus of the research in the Centre is to understand the biases infants bring to language learning, and how these changes as a function of age and language experience, with the overall goal being to understand the link between perceptual development and mature language use, using both behavioral and neural imaging techniques. In addition to the primary centre at UBC, there is also a newborn lab at the BC Children and Woman s Hospital.

Organizational Status

This position reports to the Centre Director and works closely with students, post-doctoral fellows and other research technicians in the Centre, as well as with administrative staff in the Department of Psychology, Finance Office and Office of Research Services as needed.

Work Performed

Coordinates multiple research endeavours, develops and maintains project plans, oversees project delivery and manages the overall administration of the Centre including finances.

Conducts research in the Centre, supervised by the Centre Director, including consulting on design and implementation, overseeing hardware configuration and software performance, oversees data collection.

Analyzes data, and assists in preparation of journal submissions concerning the research results.

Determines and prioritizes project timelines and work plans. Manages the hiring and appointment of student research assistants, post-doctoral fellows, and other position within the Centre.

Acts as a liaison between the Centre and relevant Department and University staff, as well as outside stakeholders.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Errors in managing the financial affairs of the Centre may result in loss of funds available from granting agencies, or in damage to the relationship between the granting agency or University and the Centre that negatively affects the financial situation of the Centre. Errors in conducting research may lead to loss of data or prolongation of the time required to complete studies, with accompanying additional expenses incurred. Errors in the management of Centre personnel may result in the creation of concerns in the Centre dynamic that have a negative impact on the morale and/or understanding of the researchers and students in the Centre.

Supervision Received

The employee will be under general supervision, receiving instruction from the Centre Director when new duties are assigned and when unusual problems arise, but will also work with some latitude.

Supervision Given

Will supervise the work done by a Research Assistant who is responsible for administrative tasks supporting the Centre functioning, and may also supervise the research done by students in the Centre.

Preferred Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.M.A., M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Psychology, Biology, Linguistics or a related discipline preferred.Minimum of three years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Minimum three years of relevant experience working with parents and infants, as well as with the public. Previous experience in managing and conducting behavioural and/or neuroimaging research in the area of infant development required. Computer experience required, in both Mac and Windows environments. An interest in language development is also required. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.Strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fluid, dynamic work environment. Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.Knowledge of MS Word and Excel required. Knowledge of Filemaker Pro and HTML, and experience with programming an asset.Ability to maintain scrupulous accuracy and attention to detail especially when working with research data and database record.Ability to work effectively independently, with mínimal supervision, and in a team environment.Ability to remain calm and exercise tact when dealing with fretful children and their parents or with stressf
