**OVERVIEW**

We are seeking a Relief Captain with a demonstrated ability to manage ship, crew and dredging operations efficiently. This position will be based on the FRPD 309, a trailing suction hopper dredger that is currently getting ready for the upcoming dredging season in June 2023

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Relief Captain’s duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Supervising the crew, navigation, dredging process, and maintenance of the dredging equipment.
- Supervising the daily operations on board to ensure that the equipment is used in such a manner that optimal production is achieved in compliance with safety, maritime and environmental regulations.
- Communicating with Project Managers, Superintendents, DPA, Surveyors, and local Authorities.
- Verifying certificates appropriate to the vessel and operating area.
- Implementing and executing company policies and the Safety Management System, when required.
- Coordinating crew activities
- Checking and maintaining safety and environmental regulations on board.
- Optimizing the production and the continuity of the vessel.
- Maintaining ship’s and personnel administration (e.g. ship’s log, daily report).
- Complying with national and international maritime law and regulations.
- Ensuring that maintenance is carried out in an efficient and most economical manner in cooperation with the Company’s Equipment and Yard Group.

The Captain has overriding authority and responsibility to make decisions with respect to safety, security and pollution prevention and to request the Company’s assistance as may be necessary.

**SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND REQUIRED COMPETENCIES**
- Certificate of Competency
- Preferred -Transport Canada Master Mariner
- Minimum -Transport Canada Master, Near Coastal
- Marine Medical Certificate, Transport Canada
- Certificate of Proficiency in Basic Safety Training
- Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats
- Certificate of Proficiency in Advance Fire Fighting
- Marine Advanced First Aid
- Radio Operator’s Certificate - Maritime Commercial, minimum
- Certificate of Proficiency as a Ship Security Officer
- Eligible to be added to Pacific Pilotage Authority Coastal Waiver from Compulsory Pilotage

**WORKING CONDITIONS**
- 12-hourdays with overtime as required
- 3-week rotation (typically two weeks on and one week off)
- Unionized position with the Canadian Merchant Service Guild
