**Position Overview**:
The research assistant will help perform an experiment using Japanese medaka. The student should have prior experience in working in animal care, have broad experience in undergraduate courses in Biology at the University of Winnipeg, and preferably, know how to drive a manual (stick) car. In addition to working in the vivarium with the fish, tasks will include feeding the fish and collecting and rearing eggs. The research assistant will perform dissections and perform qRT-PCR in the lab.

**Duties**:

- Feeding fish, collecting eggs, rearing embryos until hatching, preparing and measuring fish food.
- Dissection of medaka fish, preparation of tissues in preserving solution.
- Extraction of DNA and RNA from tissues, performing quantitative RT-PCR.
- Performing statistical analysis of data.
- Writing research report of findings.

**Qualifications**:

- Undergraduate courses in Biology, with courses in genetics and population genetics as well as microbiology, and fish biology and conservation preferred.
- Prior experience in animal care.
- Comfortable working with live and dead fish.
- Knowledge of how to drive a manual car preferred.

**Condition(s) of Employment**:

- **Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.**

The period of work will be from **May 29, 2024 - September 15, 2024 **and the estimated total hours of work will be **80-160 hours**.
