**SUMMARY**:
Under the direction of the Supervisor of ESL/LINC/LBS/Adaptive Learning Programs, the Instructor provides literacy instruction to Adult learners.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
Create and maintain a motivational environment for learning. Develop short term and long term goals appropriate to the specific program or course of the learners and plan daily activities to reflect these goals. Use varied and effective methods of presentation appropriate to the lesson content. Develop learning activities that reflect and address the learners’ training plans, the LBS Learning Outcomes matrix, and the specific context in which new skills will be used. Use techniques that make clear the purpose and content of each lesson. Plan daily learning activities and long-term strategies that address the learner’s goals as identified in their training plans. Evaluate, on an ongoing basis, the teaching and learning that takes place in the classroom and respond accordingly. Establish and maintain classroom procedures that contribute to a positive learning environment. Manage administrative responsibilities such as tracking student progress, training plan updates and demonstrations development. Maintain accurate attendance records and provide monthly attendance reports and other statistical information as required.

**SKILLS REQUIRED**:
Knowledge of objectives set forth in the Literacy and Basic Skills Guidelines (Ministry of Education and Training). Knowledge of relevant Board policies and procedures, Adult Education and Adult Literacy Programs, education environment and Board procedures and operations; organization and time management skills required to prioritize work and juggle multiple tasks and conflicting priorities with short timelines; interpersonal, and communication skills required to exchange and clarify information; oral communication and listening skills required for understanding and communicating effectively with diverse communities; ability to understand and respond to inquiries using tact, diplomacy and discretion when dealing with colleagues and students; presentation skills for delivering instruction; and ability to develop a classroom atmosphere of respect, trust and cooperation.

This knowledge would normally be obtained through completion of a Literacy Practitioner Training course or related degree from a recognized college or university; post-secondary education and experience in Adult Education; and equivalent combination of education and experience is also considered.

Instructors in the Adaptive Learning Program require specialized courses for teaching adults with developmental disabilities.
