Machine Learning Scientist, Startups

Edmonton, Canada Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute Full time

“Amii is thrilled to add a Machine Learning Scientist (MLS) to our Startup Team On the Startup team we work directly with startups who have deployed machine learning or are eager to implement machine learning into their businesses to create disruptive change and we are looking for an individual that can provide the scientific advice needed to make it happen.

This is an incredible opportunity to have a front-row seat to see technology adoption in action and uncover the potential that AI holds. Our clients will entrust you with the guidance and direction of their innovative projects, and we are looking for someone who will share their level of ambition.

You will work alongside a team of accomplished individuals who are passionate about supporting startups and driving AI adoption forward. Be a part of a hard-working team that values culture and likes to have fun. If you’re interested in being part of the organization that unlocks this opportunity in Alberta, we would love to hear from you.”
- Adam Danyleyko - Product Owner, Startups

**About the Role**

The Machine Learning Scientist (MLS) serves as a key member of the Startup Team and an active participant in maintaining Amii's reputation for scientific excellence and providing insight across various client types and sizes as well as Machine Learning specializations that range from data analysis to supervised learning to reinforcement learning to using large language models and everything in between.

The MLS uses their broad scientific knowledge, research experience, and applied machine learning experience to support startup clients as they work to build and grow their machine learning expertise and competencies.

The MLS drives success metrics for the Level Up Program (Amii’s Startup Chief Technology Officer Coaching Program) where they provide coaching to Startups, who have deployed machine learning, on their ongoing artificial intelligence and machine learning projects and products. They know how to ask the right questions to dig into a problem and fully flush out a client's challenge, current state, and ideal future state while bringing their machine-learning expertise to the coaching sessions to provide insights and advice to the clients all without ever getting into the code. They know when they are the right person to help a client and when they need to bring in other expertise from across the Amii community of staff scientists, fellows, researchers, and students to best support each client's specific needs.

The MLS bridges the gap between business opportunities and fundamental ML techniques, providing scientific insight into technical projects. This includes making informed recommendations about when more background research is required, what the data requirements may be, what modelling techniques should be tested, and what technical resources may be needed.

The MLS is also responsible for providing mentorship to technical and non-technical peers, as well as Work integrated Learning Opportunity students (WILOs).

In addition to providing guidance to industry partners and talent, the MLS will support fundamental research through partnerships with Amii Fellows and their students, working with one of the best ML departments in the world.

The role focuses on achieving excellence in three main accountabilities:

- Ability to communicate on technical topics with a non-technical audience
