Formulation of new filtration membranes with hydrogel and grafted enzyme

The use of different membranes in the field of food is increasingly common. The filtration membranes produced by Amer-Sil (Luxembourg) have recently been modified by covering them with an ionic layer, thus allowing demineralization in a similar way to conventional membranes and this, at a competitive price. The company wants to further expand the applicability of its membranes by formulating new hydrogel filtration membranes for the separation of peptides and organic acids as well as new enzyme-grafted filtration membranes for enzymatic hydrolysis. Thus, this project is part of a vast research project aimed at the eco-designed recovery of biofood co-products and the development of eco-efficient processes (VITALE Chair), through innovative and sustainable approaches based on electromembrane processes.

The objectives of this project are:
1) Formulate and manufacture of grafted and hydrogel membranes and characterize their physico-chemical properties;
2) Study the in-situ or ex-situ effect of these membranes in an electrodialysis system with filtration membrane (EDFM);
3) Identify and quantify the peptides and organic acid that migrated during EDFM.

Position Requirements:

- Successful completion of a PhD in a scientific domain (food engineering, biotechnology, polymer or food science) from an accredited higher education institution within the last three years;
- Strong interest in a career in applied research and technology development;
- Knowledge and experience in membrane processes;
- Critical scientific mind;
- Aptitude for scientific writing;
- Strong French and English language and writing communication skills.

This position is full-time (100%) and the experiments will be carried out 20% in Canada, at the Department of Food Sciences of Laval University (Quebec, Canada), under the supervision of Dr Bazinet, and 80% in Luxembourg, within the company Amer-Sil. This position is for a term of 12 months, renewable. Salary of 50,000$/year (CAD) including benefits. The Canada-Luxembourg return airfare will be paid for by the VITALE Chair.
