Position Description

The post holder will support and work closely with Dr Laksman in developing and managing research activities throughout the research project lifecycle, and with additional PIs after identifying research synergies in facilitating collaborative activities.

Major responsibilities include:

- Identifies opportunities for developing new initiatives, grants and projects that enhance funding of research in the program. This may include, but is not limited to, funding from external organizations such as SCN, CIHR, Genome Canada, CFI, NSERC, NCIC, LRF, NIH, the provincial government and industry.
- Develops and recommends project budgets, monitors expenditure of funds relative to budget, and ensures appropriate, transparent justifications for expenditures.
- Leads or participates in the development and implementation of new projects, by developing new material, researching and sourcing commercial products, and recommending staffing and resource requirements.
- Implements processes for research data management and analysis, including clinical research data.
- Manages and develops necessary agreements for the research program in conjunction with the UBC Office of Research Services/University-Industry Liaison Office.
- Serves as a primary point of liaison between researchers, administrators, and funding agencies, national and international health organizations, educational institutions, government and private agencies.
- Serves as a primary point of liaison between researchers and REBs, technical support, and administrative support at the departmental or institutional levels.
- Identifies new translational pathways, such as commercial partnerships, licensing etc. for new technologies and encourage entrepreneurial activities as appropriate.
- Contributes intellectual and scientific input to manuscripts for publications, provides scientific proofreading.
- Provides organizational structure for research laboratory.
- Manages research lab in terms of budget, ordering, stocking, supplies, and student safety and orientation.
- Liases between students and facilities and operations in terms of lab maintenance and support.
- Provides research data management and bioinformatics support for research endeavors.
- Assists clinical research coordinator by providing support for functions such as HR management, financial reporting, reagent/equipment purchasing, and similar duties as required.
- Assists PI and clinical research coordinator with additional administrative support as required.

DECISION MAKING /LEVEL OF ACCOUNTABILITY

Exercises professional judgment and initiative in the overall coordination and management of research projects. Accountable for the effective execution of all research activities. Makes decisions regarding the research review process and the development of collaborative research agreements.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works with wide latitude. Work is reviewed periodically to assess the validity of recommendations or the achievement of defined goals.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Provides direction and technical knowledge to a research team or provides functional direction to researchers. May manage staff.

Eligibility requirement

Interested individuals with a PhD and 6 or more years of relevant experience. Experience in grant preparation and scientific manuscript preparation is required. Knowledge of and/or experience in project management principles is required.
