Model Shop Machinist

The Model Shop Machinist is responsible for manufacturing production parts in

low volume, jigs and fixtures and prototypes for the manufacturing and

engineering departments of the company. The position has a primary focus on

milling, with turning as a secondary focus.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provide machining and material finishing services

2. Read and interpret engineering drawings and or examine sample parts to

determine machining operation to be performed and plan the appropriate

sequence of operations.

3. Calculate dimensions and tolerances and measure and layout work pieces.

4. Undertake the necessary machine set up tools to perform precision

machining of raw materials such as sawing, turning, milling, boring,

planning, drilling, precision grinding and other operations as required.

5. Manufacture specialty tools, jigs and fixtures as required for use in

manufacturing and engineering.

6. Fit and assemble machined metal parts and subassemblies using hand

and power tools.

7. Verify dimensions of products for accuracy and conformance to

specifications using precision measuring instruments.

8. Advise on mechanical design aspects pertaining to ease of manufacture

9. Support engineering in the development of mechanics for proto types

10. Verify dimensions of machined parts or tooling using micrometers,

verniers, calipers, height gauges, optical comparators, coordinate

measuring machines or other specialized measuring instruments.

11. Maintain precision measuring instruments such as dial indicators, fixed

gauges, height gauges etc.

12. Assists in the training of other personnel as required.

13. Verify work for compliance to workmanship standards

14. Other duties assigned to the employee by the Production Supervisor.

REQUIRED SKILLS:Competence and efficiency with milling machine tool setup,

jigging and operation
- Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings and

manufacture to precision specifications.
- Experience with manufacture of miniature parts including

working under a microscope

- Ability to polish small parts
- Strong safety orientation and work practices
- Lathe operator experience
- Familiar with all hand tool requirements of the trade
- Ability to work successfully with minimum supervision.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and craftsmanship skills
- Ability to read bills of material, instruction sheets and assembly

drawings
- Good working knowledge of materials and their properties
- Good understanding of material finishes.
- Ability to document mechanical components for reproduction

QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or equivalent

Apprenticed milling machinist and lathe operator.

Minimum 3 - 5 years’ experience working in a manufacturing precision

machine shop operation.

Ability to read and communicate in English

**Salary**: $25.00-$28.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
