**THIS IS A TEMPORARY REPLACEMENT POSITION FOR A BARGAINING UNIT EMPLOYEE.** Terms and conditions of employment are as outlined in the Support Staff Collective Agreement.

Located in Orillia and reporting to the Director, Student Success, the Student Success Advisor (SSA) honours the unique characteristics of every student and fosters growth by engaging with students ‘where they’re at’ in their daily life events. SSAs respond with empathy, provide a non-judgmental assessment of a student’s strengths and needs, identify areas for growth, and work in partnership with the student to build personal and academic resilience to help them flourish in college and beyond. Every encounter between the SSA and student is an opportunity to create conditions for student growth and empowerment in a supportive space by teaching skill development and role modelling. Whenever possible, SSAs focus on building strong rapport and a trusting relationship with each student, and are able to approach each encounter without set expectations. Specific duties include but are not limited to:

- Provision of advising to students grounded in an advising model which emphasizes proactive and responsive developmental advising across the student lifecycle.
- Engaging new Georgian College students through a variety of channels
- Creating advising plans that address key drivers of student success and identified risk factors
- Actively following up with students at certain ‘touch points’ in the student lifecycle; advising students on transition issues; reviewing potential solutions and/or options and facilitating referrals to coordinators, Office of the Registrar, and academic and student success supports
- Developing and delivering advising, student success and learning support programming (e.g. study skills); actively participating in student’s events (e.g. orientation, open house)
- Explaining academic processes and procedures to students
- Collecting data, tracking and reporting on student success, needs and retention
- Fostering strong relationships with Associate Deans, Coordinators, faculty and other service areas to ensure effective communication and a seamless student service experience
- Developing and maintaining currency of knowledge, practices and resources related to the academic area, academic procedures, college services and retention and advising strategies

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Successfully completed a three-year postsecondary degree/diploma in a relevant field of study that may include, but is not limited to human/social services, student services, education or counselling
- A one-year certificate, diploma or professional certification in student affairs/service/advising, counselling or equivalent would be considered an asset
- Five years of experience in a similar role where duties included advising students, preferably in a post-secondary environment
- Experience developing and delivering learning support programming is considered an asset
- Solid understanding of student development and adult learning theory as it relates to advising practices
- Demonstrated work and/or lived experience and commitment to working in a diverse, equity focused environment that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members
- Knowledge of academic programs and processes and experience working with diverse student populations
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and take initiative
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to address needs confidentially and professionally
- Computer proficiency MS Office - Intermediate plus experience with a scheduling software program (Clockwork or EAB Navigate preferred), a student information system (Banner preferred) as well as a web delivery software (Blackboard preferred)
- Ability to remain calm and supportive in crises and to make appropriate referrals
- Ability to travel to other campuses and work outside of regular business hours on occasion
- Knowledge of privacy legislation
