About You / What We Are Looking For

We are looking for a strategic, forward-thinking leader to join our Parks, Recreation, Culture and Facilities team in the Parks, Sport Services section. This supervisory position involves coordinating, developing, planning, and overseeing the work of skilled and semi-skilled staff engaged in installing, maintaining, and renovating sports fields, turf areas, and irrigation systems. This role requires considerable independent action and judgment, and its responsibilities encompass daily operations, project coordination, budget adherence, safety regulations, and staff management.

As a Turfcare & Irrigation Coordinator, you will be responsible for various tasks including but not limited to:

- Coordinate, plan, assign, and supervise the work of skilled and semi-skilled staff in turfcare and irrigation work and projects.
- Implement and evaluate renovation projects and maintenance programs, ensuring compliance with standards and budgets.
- Conduct site inspections to guarantee adherence to schedules, specifications, and safety regulations.
- Contribute to budget requests, prepare operational budgets, track expenditures, and liaise with relevant departments.
- Oversee purchasing processes and liaise with contractors and staff involved in technical and project work.
- Develop and implement staff training programs related to safety, customer service, and continuous improvement.
- Resolve issues, enforce regulations, and tactfully respond to groups or individuals.
- Lead, coach, and promote a team spirit of cooperation and initiative among staff.
- Establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
- Communicate clearly, consistently and effectively.

Minimum Qualifications

If you are passionate about turf management, have a strong background in supervisory roles, and possess the following knowledge and certifications, we invite you to apply:

- Considerable knowledge of irrigation systems, turf maintenance, and industry standards.
- Sound knowledge of supervisory methods, labour relations practices, and safety precautions.
- Ability to plan, supervise, and coordinate diverse groups of workers.
- Strong organizational skills, including the ability to develop service standards, safety plans, and training programs.
- Effective communication and relationship-building skills.
- Undergraduate degree, diploma, or trades certification in horticulture, turf management, park management, or related disciplines.
- Accredited courses in project management, leadership, and human resources.
- Considerable related experience in design, maintenance, installation/construction, and customer service.
- Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia.
- Integrated Pest Management Certificate or Pesticide Applicator Certificate.
- Certified Irrigation Technician - Level 1.

What We Offer:
This CUPE position has an hourly rate range of $46.06 - $54.43 per hour (2024 rates). The rate of pay is based on a variety of factors including qualifications, knowledge, experience and skills.
