Reporting to the Director of Child Youth Family Services and with the support of SD 63 Early Childhood Educator, the Strong Start Facilitator is responsible for creating a strong learning environment that delivers programming which ensures children experience the joy of success in learning and adults feel the satisfaction of knowing that they are making a difference in the life of that child. The Beacon Community Services in partnership with SD 63 ~ Strong Start Facilitator engages and participates alongside children, birth - 5 years old and their parents, grandparents, guardians, and caregivers in an early learning space in which they create an environment where learning can flourish. Approaches are guided and supported by the BC Ministry of Education & the BC Early Learning framework to support their vision of respectful learning and living well together. Services are located at Sidney Elementary School.

**PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Plan, arrange and engage in creating a welcoming parent/child drop-in program for children ages birth to 5 years
- Engage in professional learning and community events pertinent to Strong Start
- Provide current information on early learning opportunities for families in the community and provides information on the Strong Start Program
- Develop positive working relationships with the community and partners including Indigenous communities
- Maintain supplies for the program including consumables, books, arts and crafts and nutritional snacks
- Maintain detailed daily attendance about family contact including registration forms, daily attendance and any other related information according to Ministry regulations
- Liaise with appropriate community resources such as Queen Alexandra, Public Health and Beacon Community Services for children and families who require additional support
- Liaise with the Ministry of Children Family Development (MCFD) for children under child protection or requiring child protection
- Work with other Strong Start Early Childhood Educators of Saanich School District Strong Start and District Instructional Support Staff to access appropriate resources to support the Strong Start program
- Work in compliance with District and Ministry policies and procedures
- Maintain a working knowledge of current and changing District and Ministry policies and regulations and communicate this information to care providers, families, and community members
- Maintain current professional knowledge of early learning and care issues and educator practices
- Work alongside the Kindergarten teachers within the Kindergarten classrooms during children’s gradual entry to kindergarten week
- Dialogue with and provide information and resources to parents regarding childcare options and preschool settings and Accessible Child Care funding
- Inform each family about emergency evacuation procedures and leads families through the school’s lockdown drills and evacuation during school fire and earthquake drills
- Attend meetings as required that pertain to the Strong Start Program
- Perform other assigned duties that are within the area of knowledge and skills required by the job description

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Certificate in Early Childhood Education
- Five years working experience with children birth to 5 years, including experience in creating, planning, engaging and participating within and budgeting for a parent/child learning space
- Training and or experience working with parents in a partnership role
- Current Community Care Facilities Branch B.C. License to Practice
- Current Level One First Aid Certificate

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES**:

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with particular emphasis on sensitive communication with families.
- Strong organizational skills
- Working knowledge and a commitment to quality early learning as evidenced through previous experience
- Demonstrate ability to work effectively with a variety of parents, children, volunteers, professionals and community members
- Working knowledge of child development, family dynamics, community resources and early learning
- Maintains current licenses and certifications to practice and provide copies to the District
- Knowledge and experience working with Indigenous Communities (desired)
