ɬaʔamɩn Nation is a modern, self-governing Treaty Nation which takes an active role in shaping the future of education for its people through the five portfolios of its Department of Education: Early Childhood Learning, K to 12, Post-Secondary, Training & Employment, and Language & Culture. The Education Manager is a key member of the Department of Education, with a shared responsibility to contribute to ɬaʔamɩn Nation’s effective delivery of services, to help identify further opportunities and supports needed for all Nation learners, and to determine avenues for stronger Nation impact on positive outcomes for ɬaʔamɩn people.
The Nation is currently looking for a dedicated, energetic, organized and compassionate Manager of Education to join our hard-working team which works collaboratively and diligently to improve education and outcomes for all Nation members. The Manager of Education position holds responsibility for all aspects of ɬaʔamɩn
student participation in K-12 schools in the region, both the pedagogical and administrative aspects, ensuring the quality of educational and support services, as well as education-related services offered to school-aged children and youth by the Nation itself, in order to foster the academic success of all students in accordance with the teachings (taʔow) and policies of the Nation.
This position involves the supervision and support of the department’s school-based čɛpθ - Cultural Support Wokers - as well as close collaboration with the Student Success and Wellness Caseworker, Education and Employment Counsellor, and Post-Secondary Education Coordinator. The Education Manager will also support other program areas within the Dept. of Education and will work collaboratively as needed with all Nation departments in an effort to provide holistic support and opportunities to Nation members, families, children and youth.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Provide leadership and support in the development of the Nation’s K-12 education programs and structures, ensuring they meet the needs of Tla’amin Nation and citizens.
- Ensure the Tla’amin Education Agreement (TEA) is effectively implemented, bringing related issues to the director’s attention, and sit on committees pertaining to the TEA.
- Collaborate extensively with SD47’s Indigenous Education team related to educational programming, professional development, and the promotion of ʔayʔaǰuθəm (Tla’amin language) and culture in SD47 schools.
- Organize, participate in, and lead regular meetings to ensure timely and fulsome understanding of issues challenging Tla’amin student success and wellness, and work with the team to determine best steps forward.
- Organize and oversee the Nation’s after school tutoring program.
- Ensure employees have the tools and training to carry out their duties.
- Work with parents (by request) to improve education outcomes for students.
- Manage the development and implementation of effective communication regarding programs and services - within the community and with internal and external partners.
- Promote community involvement and engage community in determining program and service needs and evaluating effectiveness and satisfaction.
- Help lead and co-ordinate annual events at the Nation related to children/youth (celebrations, annual culture days, etc.).
- Support the Nation’s recreation department in the delivery of afterschool programming, as well as winter/spring break/summer camps for school-aged children and youth.
- Effectively manage the assigned education budgets and related financial matters (payment procedures) and participate in annual budget planning.
- Stay informed about and access external funding grants to support educational programming for the Nation and provide timely and accurate reporting as required.
- Assist with the development and/or review of policies, procedures and standards as required.
- Keep the director updated on all matters related to K-12 education.
- Actively participate in work related to the implementation of the Nation’s Comprehensive Nation Plan and related Dept. of Education work.
- Actively participate in meetings as directed - at times as the director’s delegate.
- Positively represent and promote the interests of Tla’amin Nation in all performance of duties.
- Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Tla’amin policies, standards, practices and procedures as directed by the Director of Education.
