ECEA Job Description
Job Title: ECEA (Early Childhood Educator Assistant)
Full Time - 40hrs/week or Part time 10hrs-20hrs/week
Centre Hours: M-F 7:00am-5:00pm
Job Summary:
The ECEA will provide a high quality, inclusive, unbiased, and supportive child care program to all of the children in their care. Staff expected to respectfully address each child’s unique needs, meet all regulatory standards required by federal, provincial, and municipal governments, and to operate within the Child Care Practitioner Occupational Standards and Code of Ethics as defined by the Canadian Child Care Federation.
Qualifications:
Valid BC ECEA certification, all documentation in accordance with BC Child Care Licensing
Regulations to be working at a licensed group child care facility, a deep understanding of child development and the issues that affect children and their families, excellent interpersonal skills with families and community members, and a mature work ethic.
Expectations:
- Work the hours presented on the weekly/monthly schedule, unless ratio or an emergency/ staffing situation requires staff to stay later. If you wish to start earlier or later for any reason, it must be approved by the centre owner first.
- Must have an understanding of licensing requirements and regularly check through the
BC Child Care Licensing Regulations to refresh memory and stay current.
- Must follow all centre policies and protocols.
- Must be respectful to other staff members and communicate any issues or concerns in a positive manner. If the issue cannot be resolved by communication, speak to the
Manager.
- Operate an emergent style curriculum based on the needs and interests of the group.
With that being said, weekly and monthly themes are mandatory, while offering activities and learning experiences for anything the children are showing interest in. Be flexible with the themes and activities and most importantly, have fun with the children There are a lot of art supplies and fun things to utilise.
- Families are to see our themes, go home with art projects, and have knowledge of the fun stuff we do at the centre. Please communicate this with them.
- Provide 90 minutes (at minimum) of outdoor play each day, even in rainy weather
- Take turns with other staff members with art activities and leading circle time (felt stories, songs, books, calendar, movement activities, games).
- Keep up to date records of children’s attendance and check through children’s files regularly to ensure files are up to date for licensing and to know each child.
- Read and write in the communication book. It is important to document anything that comes up during the day so that we have a log of everything to refer back to if needed.
- Use positive behaviour support language with the children. Focus on the positive. For example, “What kind of feet do we use inside? Walking feet, or marching feet, or tip toe feet Let me show you” as opposed to “No running”
- Build relationships with the families. If letting families know about their child’s day, ensure you are offering positive information about the day. If anything negative happens during the day that we can resolve ourselves (for example, an incident that does not require an incident report or a small melt down), we do not need to let the families know. If it was an exceptionally rough day or rough moment and you feel the family must know, sandwich the “bad” with good news. Families have a long day and want to hear the positive.
- Ensure proper cleaning of the facilities is being completed. Outdoor walkways must be swept and kept clear at all times to prevent tripping hazards, hallways must be free of hazards and kept clean and clear, dishes and sinks must be kept clean with no food residue, counters are expected to be cleared and wiped down, and general tidiness of the indoor and outdoor space is expected at all times.
- Occasionally open the Daycare and welcome families as needed.
Bubby’s Early Learning Childcare operates within a religious place of worship. All staff are expected to be kind, warm, welcoming, and respectful to all of the family members and church members at all times, despite any different personal beliefs.
