Kennel Assistant

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Kennel Assistant cares for dogs that are boarding or training and the areas they use at Obedience Unleashed facilities. This role reports to the Owner/Office Manager. Full medical and dental benefits included for employees working 20+ hours per week after 3 month probation period.

**MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES**:
The Kennel Assistant handles these responsibilities for Obedience Unleashed:
Maintaining safe and sanitary conditions in kennels, clean and disinfect kennels, training spaces, and exercise yards.

Create shopping lists for kennel equipment and supplies, including dog food orders, if applicable.

Providing routine care and grooming of canines, including periodic checks for illness, injury or abnormalities, and nail trimmings, ear cleanings, administering medication and other basic treatments.

Conduct basic dog training to reinforce behaviours taught by Obedience Unleashed Instructors.

Actively participating in the maintenance of up-to-date, accurate and complete records regarding care and training of dogs staying at Obedience Unleashed;
Provide excellent, kind and respectful customer service to clients dropping off and picking up dogs, including the ability to give a professional verbal summary of the dogs stay with us

Write updates to clients about their dogs’ stay including photo updates.

Feed dogs according to clients feeding instructions and ensure they have water topped up during your shift. Ensure food/water bowls are cleaned and sanitized daily.

Carefully organize and label dog’s belongings

Supervise play groups

Provide exercise for dogs in the form of playing games with dogs in the fenced yards, providing hikes and walks

Complete 15 hours of provided on-the-job training in Dog First Aid and Dog Handling Skills

WORKING CONDITIONS

The Obedience Unleashed Kennel Assistant shares work space and equipment with others at Obedience Unleashed facilities. There is daily interaction, and physical contact with dogs that are in boarding, daycare and training residing in the kennel, as well as, exposure to chemicals and other cleaning solutions needed to maintain the kennel. Lunch and dinner meals are provided during applicable shifts.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduation is required for full time position. We will consider outstanding high school applicants in Gr. 11 and 12 for part time position.

Experience, familiarity and skills with canine behaviour, care and safety.

Ability to learn and practice training and handling skills.

Articulate and receptive in communicating, both verbally and in writing.

Good organizational skills.

Trustworthy, able to maintain appropriate confidentiality, and having sound judgment.

Solid record of working positively and productively with others and independently.

Ability to lift 50 lbs. of food products for up to 200 feet and dogs weighing 70 lbs. for up to 10 feet.

Basic skills in using PCs; the Internet; and cell phones. Ability to learn new software.

Valid BC Driver’s License, at a minimum level of Class 5 or secure transportation as we are located in a rural area outside of municipal bus route.

Ability to work a flexible schedule, and on weekends and evenings, as operational needs of kennels require. The kennel operates 7 days a week. Full time employees work 5 days per week with 2 consecutive days off.

Criminal record check required prior to completion of hiring.

**Salary**: $17.50-$20.00 per hour
