Hike Leader

Kuri K9 Trail & Train is looking for a new Hike Leader to join our pack in Nanaimo.

We are Nanaimo’s elite off leash dog walking service, with a strong focus on structure and training on our pack hikes. Dog numbers are limited to 8 clients per hike, with packs carefully curated to set each member up for success. Currently we have one full time staff member (owner Melody Shaw) and one part time employee.

We support balanced training methods; focusing on positive reinforcement, clear boundaries and corrections as needed. Some of our pack members require e-collars to participate, you must be comfortable with the use of them and prepared to learn how to use them safely and humanely in the various styles dogs have been trained with.

Hikes are 2 hours long, and while training and behaviour are the main focus, you must be fit enough to cover around 6km per hike. This is an all weather job - you will get wet, you will get hot - you must love the outdoors. You must also be comfortable driving a vehicle, reversing and parallel parking.

Employees are expected to actively work with, and train dogs on our hikes. Helping to create and maintain behaviours such as:

- Loose leash walking
- Recall
- Sit/stays
- Good social skills
- Impulse control
- Boundaries
- And more

Ideally we are looking for someone with dog training or industry experience; however responsible, driven and dedicated individuals willing to learn will be considered.

The position is part time (around 15 hours/week) with room to grow and become full time for the right person. Shifts are currently Monday mornings, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons with additional hours available on weekends and during the week depending on bookings.

Our office is based in the Cedar/Yellowpoint area, and we have routes servicing Cedar/Yellowpoint/Chase River, and Nanaimo. You will be expected to start and end your shift at our office.

**Requirements**:

- 21 years or older
- Full, clean driver’s licence - abstract required
- Own transport to and from work (a vehicle is provided during shifts)
- Minimum 1 year employment contract, non-compete contract required
- Available for morning shifts (6.45am - 12.30pm approx), afternoon shifts (11.45am - 4.30pm approx), and occasional weekend work (usually approx 11am, but flexible)
- Reliable cellphone with camera
- Own appropriate footwear and wet weather gear

Training will be provided, however previous dog training experience and knowledge is an asset. After training, you will be expected to operate relatively independently, problem solve, provide reports on the hikes and ask for support as needed.

Pay: $16.00/hr training wage, 3-6 weeks depending on experience; $17.00-$21.00/hr starting wage depending on experience.
