**Days/Hours of Work**: Full time, Tuesday - Saturday (37.5 hours per week) Start and end times can vary. Evening and weekend availability is required.

Reporting to the Director, SHOAL Centre and Senior Services, the Food Service Manager is a dynamic person responsible for leading the kitchen team to work as a unit, for all our kitchen programs and services. SHOAL kitchen provides freshly prepared homemade meals twice daily for our Assisted Living and Independent Living residents as well as Senior Activity Centre patrons and the public.

At SHOAL, our staff provides a home-like, reassuring environment that encourages residents' participation and includes residents’ personal preferences. The kitchen operates a vibrant catering department for in-house rentals, catering and events and operates a meal program with meals going out to the public.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**Staff Leadership and Development**:

- Schedule staff based on dining and catering needs, showcasing leadership experience
- Provide guidance and supervision to kitchen staff for food quality and customer service excellence
- Oversee training and development of staff, including performance management
- Play a key role in the hiring process, conducting interviews and making hiring recommendations

**Budget Management**:

- Monitor and control labour and food costs to meet budget goals
- Assist and provide input for the annual budgeting process

**Operational Responsibilities**:

- Prepare dietitian-approved menus, meeting Canada’s Food Guide, for daily meals and snacks
- Contribute to overall food service operations, covering dining, catering, meal programs, and baking
- Regularly meet and consult with the Catering and Event Manager to plan meal delivery for special events, catering, and the dining room
- Identify areas to improve best practices for operational effectiveness

**Inventory Management**:

- Create an inventory process to anticipate, identify, and correct issues with inventory and systems
- Perform necessary ordering and ensure adequate supplies for meals, catering, and meal delivery programs.
- Weekly food supply purchasing at local wholesalers
- Review the food purchasing process to identify areas for improvement

**Quality Control and Compliance**:

- Ensure proper food rotation, optimize food use, and store products at the correct temperatures to reduce waste
- Monitor kitchen operations for compliance with health, fire, and food handling regulations
- Responsible for tracking and completing daily, monthly, and annual inspections
- Ensure all Assisted Living residents' dietary requirements are met, and food preferences are considered
- Perform other duties as required

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**:

- Completion of a foundational culinary arts program or a combination of education and experience
- Experience supervising kitchen staff in a unionized environment
- Previous experience in a Long-Term Care Facility is considered an asset
- FOODSAFE Certificate
- First Aid with CPR Certificate
- Driver’s license and access to a vehicle preferred

**SKILLS AND ABILITIES**:

- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong leadership skills
- Skilled in the use of MS 365 (Outlook, Excel, Teams, etc)
- Ability to work quickly, safely and efficiently in a commercial kitchen
- Ability to organize work and operate related equipment
- Ability to interact effectively with residents, families, co-workers, members of the multidisciplinary team and the public
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
- Ability to perform the duties of all kitchen positions
- Strong relationship-building skills
